You keep saying this; but you still haven't shown how you intend to:
1 - verify that it wasn't your daughter
2 - where each person who has access to your house was
3 - check the beds for those you knew were home

Actually I did. Re-read and use your brain at the same time. If I am grabbing my gun in my house, before I would shoot anybody I would either know that everybody I loved was not in the line of fire, or I would not shoot until I was sure that the person "approaching me in the dark" was not one of them. Any other action is taking unnecessary risk with your family. The most likely people to enter your house, even at night, are people who live there. Even if you think they are "supposed to be in North Carolina"...
The reality is, she didn't follow the first step in home defense, make sure you know where your loved ones are. Otherwise your chances of shooting one of your loved ones is very close to 100%.
