Concern for what, the body is already cold, accidental shooting, tragic for the parent. Now how about you address the donkey in the room, the strictest gun controls will mean that only CRIMINALS will have guns, is that what you want. I choose not to be a target, wait, you think if we confiscate guns crime will go away, well if stupid could fly you would be a jet!

And if it was a criminal with a gun he/she would know exactly where she was, see we can do this all day. It was a horrible accident leave it that way, quit trying to score points for gun confiscation, because that will be the undoing of this country. Leave the second alone, and try to get guns from the criminals, instead of sending them to drug cartels.

Many a time she alerted us to something and I was able to chase stray dogs off of the porch, who were trying to get at the cats.

Off topic:
My wife called me one time, while I was in town, and said that Lady had been barking and when she opened the door, there was a pit-bull mix trying to get the cats.
When she tried to shoo it away, it growled at her; so she shut the door and called me.
By the time I got home, it had left.
I called the cops and reported the incident and told them that since it growled at my wife, I was a little uncomfortable with it coming back and request that the animal control officer look around our area.
The dispatcher told me that without the animal being contained, there was nothing they would or could do.
I told her fine and that if it came back, I would just stick the barrel of my shotgun against it's head, splatter it's brains all over the place and then call them back to report the dog was now contained.
She then began telling me that I would be in trouble for doing so and I reminded her that as a property owner, I had the right to protect my family and property; which included pets and / or livestock.

Had an Officer show up within 10 minutes, took the description of the dog (from my wife) and we never saw the dog again.

According to the information this person already knew where she was, she was being "approached in the dark". Simply asking, "Is that you?" would have avoided the tragedy. Seriously, take some home defense courses just buying a gun and feeling better only puts people in your house in danger. I fully support an armed populace, I do not like when people are foolish about it.

Make a plan and know that if you fire a gun inside a home you are more likely to shoot somebody who lives there than somebody intruding. Even in "bad" neighborhoods the most likely person to be walking around your house in the dark is somebody who lives there.

Learning from the mistakes of others is not a personality flaw.

Looked over and the Cop had shot the second dog, through it's right eye, when it was about 5 feet from him.

The Officer called it in (shots fired), other cars arrived, I filled out an incident report, and told the field Supervisor that in my opinion, the Cop had no other choice.

The searched and found the other dog, had animal control impound it, and ticketed the owner for having two dangerous animals and allowing them to run loose.

The really sad part is, is that the Officer had to allow the shot dog to just bleed out; because it was no longer a threat and he couldn't shoot it again.

The woman calls out: "Who is there?"

If it was her daughter, then she would recognize her mother's voice when the woman called out and answer.

If it was a criminal with a gun, he/she would NOT answer when the woman called out, so the woman would then know to SHOOT whoever it is approaching in the dark.

Apparently, learning from the mistakes of others is an assumed character flaw for some people. I still say that shooting people because it is dark is a bad home defense plan and therefore made sure I had a better plan. But hey.
