Gun Nut KILLS Daughter

There was something wrong with that woman's training if she showed such a lack of self-control.

Absolutely. I think training is the single largest factor in cop shootings. Well that and sometimes, like the cop that shot the kid just walking down the street, it is just flat murder.

In this case an off duty cop made what I would call the stupidest of mistakes. The absolute first thing I would ever do if I had to pick up my gun at home is to make sure I knew where everybody I loved was.

While this is a tragedy and a lot of people are saying that she was wrong, I have yet to see anyone suggest specifically what she SHOULD have done.,

I would suggest finding out where the people who live in your house are before you start shooting. It really is simple. If I have to grab a gun in my house at night the first thing I do is put eyes on each member of the family and make sure I know they are not in front of me. Anybody else in the house is fair game.

And how are you going to find out where the people who live in your house are; because your explanation feels nice, you offered no game plan.

By looking for them. Seriously. This is one of the stupidest posts I have seen by you. You are better than this.

I would start by looking where they should be, their rooms. If they are not in there I would not shoot until I knew where they were. If I don't know they are behind me... Where they are... I simply would not shoot. There is a greater chance of me shooting them than an intruder if I follow any other plan.

Let's say one of my daughters was out staying the night elsewhere. I don't know that she hasn't come back... I wouldn't shoot until I had identified who I was shooting at. Yeah, it may put me in more danger, but I would not shoot without knowing I was not shooting at one of my own family. There is still a greater chance that I would wind up shooting my family member than an intruder at that point.

These are things I learned in home defense classes. They weren't even expensive.

Now now now...it's MUCH more important for Damo to ridicule me, than it is for him to honestly assess that woman's actions.

are you going to address the FACT that this person was a cop? therefore, one of your 'duly appointed law enforcers' who had the right to take the law in to her own hands??????

the problem is that the victim in this instance did not live in the home where she was shot. doesn't fit in to your scenario.

That fits more into the second scenario. I know one of the family is out of the house and may enter without my knowledge. At that point I would take special care to identify before I shot at anyone in the house. As I said before, you still have a higher percentage to shoot the loved one than an intruder if you don't know where your loved ones are. In this case, I would call my eldest (the adopted one is in the military) to ensure I knew where she was before I started shooting. I'd hate to shoot her because she wanted to surprise me.

If I don't know where each person who has access to my house is, I do not shoot indiscriminately.

You have someone approaching you and the daughter was visiting relatives in North Carolina.
How do you intend to get past the person in your home to look for them?

Unless your home defense class told you to ask the intruder to stop, while you assured yourself of where everyone was!!

Once again; how do you do this when you have someone approaching you, IN THE DARK??

I would need to verify that it wasn't my daughter before I shot them. I would not shoot anybody until I was sure I knew where each person who has access to my house was. Assuming they are somewhere is not the plan. Just as I would check the beds for those I knew were home. If I did not find them there I would not shoot until I knew where they were...

You don't shoot. It isn't hard. If you do not know where the people who live there (or who have access to there) are you don't shoot indiscriminately. The chances at that point of shooting somebody you don't want to shoot are extremely high.

In a perfect world, your actions would work; but how do you intend to use the phone to call her, when you have someone approaching you IN THE DARK?

In an imperfect world my actions would serve. If I don't know where the people who live there are, nobody would get shot until I was sure they were not supposed to be there. It would not serve to shoot anybody in my house that approached me just because it was dark. You are FAR more likely to shoot somebody who should be in your house than an intruder if you start shooting indiscriminately at people because it is dark.

You keep saying this; but you still haven't shown how you intend to:
1 - verify that it wasn't your daughter
2 - where each person who has access to your house was
3 - check the beds for those you knew were home

When you have someone approaching you in the dark.

You must believe that since you don't shoot, that it means the intruder is going to play nice and hot harm your family.

do you have statistics for time variables of the above? like how long would it take to call your loved one? what do you do if they don't answer? how far will the unknown person progress in your home before you feel forced to take action?????
