My brother was an Air Force officer who spent a career sitting at a desk, and he was in less danger than nurses or paramedics. He never would have favorably compared himself to Rambo.

If I had a solution I would be loudly advocating for it. One of my recurring thoughts along that line is that we improve our education system, but that is largely in the hands of state authorities, which are solidly in the hands of profiteers who are fully satisfied to have a misinformed populace that they may collectively and individually take full advantage of.
And worse, the profiteers have made a great business if spreading misinformation despite the negative effects it has on national security.

Lots of Democrats are clamoring for "free college". I'm against "free" anything since it's never really free but, worse, because a gift quickly turns into an entitlement. Better to give everyone the opportunity to earn it.
Have some sort of work program like FDR's CCC, AmeriCorps, Peace Corps or the military to allow people to join for 2-4 years with an equal number of college years returned as payment.
The assumption is that an educated populace is a boon to the country and makes us more innovative and competitive. That is why we have free K-12. College should be free or cheap. When I was going, you could work a part-time job and cover tuition. Now it cost hundreds of thousands. It is run by businessmen instead of educators.
Chinas most prestigious universities are public. They are free or cheap. I believe that have to pass tests to get in.
Lots of countries have free college.
