who says nothing works? our policy has been mostly working for quite awhile.

There's just one piece that needs work. And there are ways to solve it that don't involve the expense (and stupidity) of building a wall.

Remember...walls keep people in as well as out. As we have tightened the border the last decade or so, more illegal immigrants are staying in the US, rather than traveling back and forth between their home country and the US, because they are worried they won't be able to get back in.

Sure here's a solution that would work. Anyone who knowingly hires or employs an illegal alien will be fined $10,000 and sentenced to not less than 6 months in jail per occurance.

In theory a fence on the border sounds great but at least to me in reality it does not. The idea of being the freest country in the world and having a fence along our border to keep people out just doesn't jive. It's too Chinese Communist like imo.

I am not for supporting illegals who sneak across our borders. I am for increased H1-B visas and work visas for those who want to come from other countries to the U.S. to work. I cannot fault someone who wants to better their and their families lot in life by coming to the U.S. I would like to see a better mechanism in place where it is done legally.

It's a simple solution. If you want to reduce the number of illegals in our nation than you have to implement punitive sanctions on those whom employ illegals. Supply and demand.

As far as illegal immigration, we have a couple realistic solutions. Either penalize the companies who hire them by jailing them, or by forcing them to pay the illegals the same wages as Americans. Either reduces demand. Of course illegal immigration is the only area I really support tough, near draconian laws. I'm not big on confering our rights and privlages to non-citizens who broke the law to enter our nation.

Problem with sanctions - we already have them; they don't work too well; and they can lead to discrimination.

We need a much better visa program that doesn't take forever. We need a GOOD guest worker program so we can get the workers from south of the border that our farmers and other industries need, but that ensures they are paid fairly, treated fairly, aren't used to undercut other workers, and somehow accounts for the fact that many of them will go back south to retire, instead of collecting social security here. Or we need to send their earned payments to them down south.

It's not a good idea to reduce the supply of jobs or make it a possible crime to hire someone. It will, without any doubt, hurt Hispanic citizens or those who have some trait that would make an employer suspicious of their legal status. To do so based on bad economics and xenophobia seems foolish.

Immigrants do not enter illegally or overstay so that they can get paid less. They do it because complying with the law is often too costly or the hurdles are too high.

Immigration is a good thing for our country. The way to reduce illegal immigration is to simply increase the supply and reduce the burden of legal immigration. We can handle lots more immigrants and without them we will most certainly fall behind India and China on the world stage.
