Status of your father!

Their choice, but I think American taxpayers will benefit most from better educated HS students instead of only focusing upon college students....which is the current DNC mantra.

But it needs to start before that since the problem often solidifies in the primary education of lousy urban schools and a culture that doesn't value education.

It needs to start somewhere. If pumping up funding for public K-12 schools is a bad idea, then why is giving poor kids with shitty HS educations a free ride in college better?

It's not a bad idea; it's a good idea, but the "somewhere" be the primary level.

Agreed on the primary level being K-12. Another idea is making college classes more accessible such as online. Not all classes can be done online, but most can. Testing and labs can be made available for a nominal fee.

Here's something else. Go to ABC Community College then finish up at XYZ University. What does the four year degree say? Yes, XYZ University.

Agreed. A meritocracy is best.

Even better, IMO, is to maximize the education of all Americans K-12....which is what We, the People, should have been doing all along but haven't. Only 8% of school funding is Federal. The remaining 92% is local. Poor counties and poor states produce poor students. Giving a poor student a free ride at community college isn't the solution.
I look at the nations with free college educations and disagree with you.

I doubt those students apply to college.

Because they come from shitty schools that don't push their students to better themselves.

Yes, there are other cultural problems, but saying the school system is fine and the only thing that needs to be done is offer free college strikes me as very short sighted.

Who said there wasn’t a need?

There are no perfect answers. We recognize that people born into poor neighborhoods with substandard schools have very limited and difficult roads to economic betterment. There are plenty of highly gifted people in bad areas who are not getting the chances they deserve. It is not just the schools. It is the environment that adds to the problems of a better life. It is the entertainment. It is the people who know they're doomed and want to take everyone down with them. It is tough to concentrate on school when you are fighting to find food and keep the home lights burning.
A few can escape. But they sure cannot afford higher education.

Germany, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, France, Spain, Greece, Switzerland, Austria and Scotland to name a few.
I'd have to see more details on those programs.

That said, I know we can do better as a nation. What doesn't surprise me is how much pushback all the Democrats on this thread are giving me about better K-12 schools.

Who said there wasn’t a need?
All Democrats talk about is college. Rarely, if ever, about public schools.

Do you know who is talking about public schools? The Republicans. Specifically, school vouchers so they can pull their kids out and put them into private schools.

Supreme court says racy cannot be a factor for admissions, but status of your father can.

If your parents can donate a huge chunk of money or if granddaddy graduated that can be the only factor.

I just found out that if you give a huge chunk of money, you can eat at Nobu in Beverly Hills, but if you're poor, the best you can do is gas station sushi....

Agreed.

Agreed again. It's a problem that goes beyond schools. It goes to decent jobs and affordable housing safe from gangs.

It appears they can't afford a decent K-12 education either. Why is there so much pushback from the Left on K-12 education? Why do you think an 18 year old kid who grew up in a shitty neighborhood with a shitty family and went to a shitty school for 13 years is suddenly going to be the next Clarence Thomas by being a given a free ride at a community college?

No, most ethical people would not admit an unqualified student despite the amount of money Fred Trump donated to them.

Rather than looking at race, why not award "points" (or whatever they call their systems) based on h.s. academic achievement (#1), economic status of the applicant's high school with points going to a student from less affluent areas with rural or urban, major/area of study (is it in a field that is likely to be in demand, like STEM?).

Why make it complicated?

Why not offer quality public education to everybody
and let the private schools do whatever the hell they want to do?
