No, I did not support the invasion of Iraq. The people of Iraq didn't want us there.

The people of Libya didn't want us there either.

The people of Syria don't want us there either, most support Assad.

How about this, the American people don't want us in Syria either.

Why would what Iraq's didn't want make a difference where what Libyans and Syrians didn't want doesn't?

Why are you now so pro-war, nuke 'em, blow up the planet?

I don't know and going by this thread, never. I'm just straightening out the people who said it started with Susan Rice.

Thank you sister .. I'm one of those who said that it was started by Rice.

Our UN Ambassador's Shocking False Rape Claim
excerpts

Back in the spring of 2011, in an attempt to persuade nations growing increasingly skeptical about NATO-led attacks on Libya, especially India, Russia and China, Rice went before a closed door meeting of the United Nations Security Council and announced that Gaddafi's forces were issuing Viagra, the drug used to treat erectile dysfunction, to soldiers "so that they go out and rape" civilians in areas that support the rebels. "This story was taken so seriously that some people started writing to Pfizer to get it to stop selling Viagra to Libya, since its product was allegedly being used as a weapon of war." http://allafrica.com/stories/201110281053.html?page=7

According to news reports, Rice's allegation was false. "There is no evidence that Libyan military forces are being given Viagra and engaging in systematic rape against women in rebel areas, US military and intelligence officials told NBC News on Friday." (The story is archived here: http://truthlover.newsvine.com/_new...ntel-no-evidence-of-viagra-as-weapon-in-libya)

The news report notes that "several diplomats said Rice provided no evidence for the Viagra allegation, which they said was made in an attempt to persuade doubters the conflict in Libya was not just a standard civil war but a much nastier fight . . . ." Less delicate voices were more blunt: "Rice is a liberal interventionist who was one of those to persuade Obama to intervene in Libya. She utilized this myth because it helped her make the case at the UN that there was no 'moral equivalence' between Gaddafi's human rights abuses and those of the insurgents." http://allafrica.com/stories/201110281053.html?page=7

To our knowledge, Ms. Rice has never bothered to explain her claim, never apologized, never expressed regret about it. This, despite the fact that it would be difficult to imagine a false claim about a matter more serious because it was uttered to buttress support for a policy that exposes soldiers in combat and innocent civilians to the most serious risk imaginable. The fact that this false rape claim was made by a leading official of the most powerful nation on earth should be a grave concern to the entire world community. Yet, we saw no condemnations nor expressions of outrage by anyone, including the GOP and women's groups, regarding this flagrant abuse of the power to cry rape.

Regardless of who may have uttered the words first or why, it was Susan Rice who brought an unsubstantiated kie to the UN to use as rational for invasion.

The story about Viagra sounds far fetched but why is it so hard to believe that Ghaddafi's soldiers raped civilians? They did a damn sight worse than that to the citizens of Misrata and Sirte.

Amnesty questions claim that Gaddafi ordered rape as weapon of war

Human rights organisations have cast doubt on claims of mass rape and other abuses perpetrated by forces loyal to Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, which have been widely used to justify Nato's war in Libya.

Nato leaders, opposition groups and the media have produced a stream of stories since the start of the insurrection on 15 February, claiming the Gaddafi regime has ordered mass rapes, used foreign mercenaries and employed helicopters against civilian protesters.

An investigation by Amnesty International has failed to find evidence for these human rights violations and in many cases has discredited or cast doubt on them. It also found indications that on several occasions the rebels in Benghazi appeared to have knowingly made false claims or manufactured evidence.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton last week said she was "deeply concerned" that Gaddafi's troops were participating in widespread rape in Libya. "Rape, physical intimidation, sexual harassment, and even so-called 'virginity tests' have taken place in countries throughout the region," she said.

Donatella Rovera, senior crisis response adviser for Amnesty, who was in Libya for three months after the start of the uprising, says that "we have not found any evidence or a single victim of rape or a doctor who knew about somebody being raped

Liesel Gerntholtz, head of women's rights at Human Rights Watch, which also investigated the charge of mass rape, said: "We have not been able to find evidence."

Before I go any further, let me acknowledge that it is clearly in the rebels' interest to portray Col Gaddafi's forces in the worst possible light.
It is also possible that the soldiers were coerced into telling us lies.
And there is a big difference between individual acts of violence committed during wartime and a systematic campaign to target civilians.

all we have is suspect accounts.

Recall Gaddafi himself was sodomized by the NTC, before someone mercifully put a bullet into Gaddafi.
Recall his boy was displayed for days (a gfross violation of Muslim burial custom) in some grocery store freezer.

From what I've read - rape and sodomy are used as weapons, not justy sexual deviance/predation by some in Africa.

The real, final question should be (at least to my mind) is Libya better off now then under Gaddafi?"

I'd say no, i'd also say the west took a UN resolution way too far.

Not mi nimizing any war crimes -there were plenty going around, but why did we have to take a "no fly" , and turn it into a targeted assasination of Gaddafi?

My God, I remember how the hard left refused to believe that the Russians raped German women wholesale in WW2. American soldiers did the same in France to a lesser extent. Now the cynical left can't or more likely won't believe that Ghaddafi was anything less than a saint.

well he was a mixed bag, something I have tried to convey in my postings.
Gaadafia was a dictator. Not a saint. He (was also a reformed terrorists. shook Obama's hand, was a member in good standing of rhe world community, etc.

I tend to think Gadafi was a better fit for Libya, then the current dysfunctional gov't, but there is room for debate

His agents blew up Pan Am 103, supplied arms and Semtex to the IRA and was responsible for a number of terrorist attacks in Europe including the Berlin disco bombing and he funded the Black September group who perpetrated the 1972 Munich massacre of 11 Israeli athletes. Yes, such a nice chap.

I didn't support the attack on Libya but I had no love for Ghaddafi, either. For years and years he was on different lists of the world's worst dictators. His human rights record wasn't stellar and was criticized by Amnesty Int'l. just three years ago. There were the bombings back in the '80s including Lockerbie. The US used to call Libya a state sponsor of terrorism and didn't start to normalize relations until 10 years ago. Not that long ago (2011) Ghaddafi was killing those who protested his regime.

Ghaddafi did some good things for Libya but the bottom line is he was a dictator for 40 years even if now he's thought of as a benevolent dictator. It doesn't change my mind about him. Dictators can still implement the occasional policy that people like. Example, Mussolini launched public service projects and got the trains to run on time but so what, he was a dictator too. IMO whatever Ghaddafi did that was good, it was far outweighed by the bad.

Many Iraqis supported Saddam Hussein for the same reasons Libyans supported Ghaddafi. But both were still dictators with oppressive regimes.

I'd have to check on these, the point you seem to continually misss is after his tent was almost blown up by Reagan, he renounced terrorism, allowed the to roam -which was to our benefit, paid repeartions for Lockerbie , was slated to get a hmanitarian prize.

More importantly he allowed women to serve in high office, virtually unheard of in Muslim countries, guaranteed housing, kept the oil revenues in the People nmae, not a corporation, had one of the highest literacy rates, and ( for me at least) was an avid chess fan/ player

OK I play chess, so that isn't entirely unbiased

Ilyumzhinov, who is also a Russian provincial governor, said the Libyan leader had told him he had no intention of leaving the country.

It has been four months since the uprising against Gaddafi started with the civil war now seemingly stuck in a stalemate.

Nearly three months of bombings by Nato war planes against Libyan military targets have failed to unseat the Libyan dictator or enable the rebels to launch an offensive on his territory in Tripoli.

Gaddafi has called the Nato intervention with warplanes and attack helicopters an act of colonial aggression aimed at grabbing Libya's oil

Most of all he had free health care, a fairly dynamic economy, and the support of most of the people -at least in the cities, and western parts.

Once again - compare this with the Thugs from the East, whom have not even come close to these achievemnets.

and it could be argued that Iraq was better off under Hussein. He was a strongman who used brute force to hold that nation together, and kept Iran in check.

Compare this to Iraq being in a CONSTANT civil war since then ( same with Libya) a colony of Iraq, and a place where AQIR flourishes.

What kind of better outcome is that for that country, or our efforts? total fail.

You'll get no argument from me about Iraq. They're still trying to dig out from the hellscape we turned their country into.
