Ryder Cup @ Bethpage Black

I’ve been to two Ryder Cups. Louisville , KY
and Kildare, Ireland. Crowds were loud of course but very well behaved.
Both sold out.
Size of the nearby city is irrelevant.
The venue can only accommodate so many.
Louisville was six years ago, a lot has changed, the country’s demeanor has changed, drastically, and I’ve been to another Ryder in Rochester, NY, that was uneventful, plus a Derby in Louisville years ago which was ugly

The course is in metro NY, not nearby, and given the numbers is bound to have assholes

I've not been to a Ryder Cup but based on the people I know who have gone, and I'm assuming they're not outliers, they are educated and make decent money. There's a big corporate element to the Ryder Cup as well.

Of course being educated and having money clearly doesn't preclude someone from being an obnoxious a*hole but it's not a blue collar demographic that dominates at this event.

I think the tickets are $750

A little country unity as we (hopefully) smack the Euros around. Let's go boys!

USA, USA, USA
Doesn't look like there has been much coverage stateside of the violence there. Rory McIlroy's wife was hit on the head by a can of beer thrown from the gallery is just one example.

Not dominate but I suspect a *much* higher percentage than one would see at the Olympic Club, e.g. .
It was probably blue collar drunks that were causing the most trouble.
I haven't seen any data but I know these tickets were pricey, and a fair number of people travelled for it so that screams out higher income folks.

But a high education level and high income doesn't stop many New Yawkas from being jack*sses. It's who they are.

What’s blue collar anymore? Middle aged guys with no families, mortgage, the whole array of responsibilities, have the discretionary funds and it is an event. You put it in an area as metro NY with its population and anything is going to draw assholes. Look at the crowds at NFL games, they are not a cheap ticket, but their nuts, you don’t think all those heavily costumed clowns they show on TV are married men with families at home

As a side note, I’ve been to a Ryder Cup and I wouldn’t go again. Keep in mind that other than Sunday, there are only four matches occurring at the same time. The crowd isn’t spread out around the course, but follow the players. The majority of the course is empty at any given time through the day. Been to two majors at Bethpage and both were as expected

I know we shouldn't judge a book by it's cover, but I've been to NFL games and it looks like a decent number of people spent their year's disposable income to attend. That said, a NFL game and the Ryder Cup aren't comparable.

Yes Ryder Cup's are different than really any other golf event, outside maybe the President's Cup, in terms of how we cheer. But this past weekend was unlike any other. The fact that they had to bring in extra security for Europe's players and spouses says it all. The constant cussing at the players and people throwing beer on Rory's wife? Come on. That's never been what the Ryder Cup is about. It was disgraceful. I get it, you're from New York and no one likes to see their area ripped on. But it's fully deserved.

I wouldn't travel to go to a Ryder Cup but I belong to the Olympic Club and we're hosting in 2033. If I get the chance, I'm going.

Agreed if you find a place we could apologize as Americans to the European players let me know. I'd like them to know that is everyday American are ashamed of our fellow Americans and their disgraceful behavior.

I’m not aware of a specific place to do that, but the fact that people like Tom Watson have spoken out says a lot. I’ve also heard people on sports talk radio say they’re embarrassed. Many of the European players actually live here, so I’m sure they’ll hear it as well.

And again, I’m sure the overwhelming crowd was as expected, Mcllroy said himself he never felt physically threatened, in the age of the camera phone, any asshole can achieve what he wanted regardless of the location. The PGA will continue to schedule events at Bethpage

To each his own, but you’re clearly excusing the behavior. There isn’t national outrage, with people like Tom Watson speaking out, just because one a*hole with a phone said something mean. And it has nothing to do with whether future events are held at Bethpage.

Not at all, as I said, it was unacceptable, but I don’t believe the overwhelming majority of the crowd behaved that way

As another side note, non relating to this Ryder event, and I know it will be miscrewed, but professional golfers are probably the most babied individuals in sports. The overwhelmingly majority come from and refine their game in pampered environments and expect the same throughout. Never understood how hitting a ball off a stationary tee requires dead silence while hitting a baseball coming at you at 90+ MPH with sixty feet decide can be done in deafening noise. Just saying

I finally had a chance to speak to one of my co-workers who went. He said it was awful. He said he was embarrassed to be an American and his comment was "were these people raised in barns?" He just said he couldn't believe the things that were coming out of people's mouths.

He's just one person but he was boots on the ground.

Guidos from Jersey and the Island, could get myself in trouble for that one
