Ryder Cup @ Bethpage Black

Golf is supposed to be a gentleman's sport. NFL not so much.

People are people, where it doesn’t matter.

I never understood the Golf is suppose to be a gentlemen’s sport bit. I never understood how silence is expected when a golfer hits a stationary ball off of a elevated tee but a young baseball player with people yelling behind him has to hit a ball coming at him at 90+ MPH with only 60 feet to decide

Because one is a gentleman's sport and the other is not.

Wait a minute, so crowd behavior is only bad in the NY/NJ area?
It's worse there. Everybody knows it, it's their reputation. The fact that you're apologetic towards that behavior idicates to me that you're probalbly from around there. The Euro team was even forewarned about the NY crowds' anticipated behavior.
There are assholes in every crowd at any athletic event across the country, as I said, ever been to an NFL game
Yes. Not in a while. I don't remember the crowd acting like complete immature assholes.
Besides the fans are very much removed from the players.
And promoters aren’t going to erase a huge money maker as banning alcohol
Then have the event in a more civilized environment where the people from the area understand how to control themselves.

Happens, but I wouldn’t paint the entire crowd that way
It happens that the MC leads the crowd in a vulgar chant towards a player at a golf match?

You must live in an alternative universe.
That or you're completely ignorant as to etiquette behavior at a golf event.
Stick to your games between northeast NFL games where you can get sloppy drunk, throw beer at the coaches and players and curse naked in the stands and nobody even notices.
No wonder there's strict membership requirements for private country clubs. They don't want savages like you there.

As far as golf events go, the Ryder Cup is unique in terms of how fans behave and cheer. That said, there's a reason so many people having a similar response to the behavior this weekend.

Just read this before coming back to check this thread. I’m sure a lot of the old guys are apologetic.

It has been changing. One of the late tournaments, TPC Scotsdale, has stands built around a par 3 and the people get there early and get drunk. It has always been super loud and the pros seem to like it. The problem at Bethpage was the personal attacks and insults.

Cheering is OK but insults isn't. I'm not sure but I think this may because of Northern fans and alcohol. I have never seen the insult hurling at a golf tournament.

“everybody knows it,” kinda tips off what you think of the NY Metro area. With a population close to twenty million, larger than 45 States, living in area of 6,000+ sq mi, roughly the size of New Hampshire, you are going to find more assholes than Mayberry, USA.

NFL crowds are full of assholes, can not recall any NFL game I attended, and I’ve been to seven or eight different stadiums, were there wasn’t a fight.

And where would that civilized environment be exactly?

Fans get sloppy drunk at all NFL games, and what happened at Blackpaige was unacceptable but not characteristic of the entire crowd, as I’ve said, every event has some assholes attending

And I did belong to a private course for awhile, wasn’t worth it, didn’t play enough, and I thought it was humorous how some fellow members with double digit handicaps thought they belonged to Westchester

Have you ever been to a Cowboy game and how would you rate the behavior?
No sir, but I’ve been to several OU games … in the Stoops days, the Riley days and now the Venables days. Behavior was much better the further back you go. I was there the night they chanted a young Spencer Rattler off the field. I wanted to thrash the lot of them. I wasn’t there but I also understand they were terrible to Jackson Arnold when Auburn came to town. Fan behavior is out of hand, IMO.

A little trash talk among fans as they go up and down the ramps is one thing but there are lines being crossed. And then, to see it on a national stage like the Ryder cup that we’re hosting …shameful.

I’ll save my yelling at players for when I’m in my living room with my TV (and maybe my wife). Like when that Dallas defensive back took 4 steps and shouldered that guy last night gettin a personal foul when we had them at 3rd and long. I called him an “idiot” but he didn’t hear me. Probably wouldn’t have mattered … our defense can’t stop a nosebleed.

I’ve been to two Ryder Cups. Louisville , KY
and Kildare, Ireland. Crowds were loud of course but very well behaved.
Both sold out.
Size of the nearby city is irrelevant.
The venue can only accommodate so many.

Reminds me of an Eagles game. Pretty bad behavior.
I’d say bad behavior is allowed at those type of events.
The drunken football hooligans are almost expected in GB. But not golf.
And think about it… the golf fans from the same country know how to behave at a Ryder Cup.
