[h=1]UK Rape Gang Jailed For String Of Sex Offences Against Teenage Girl[/h]

[h=2]Ten – mostly Muslim men – who committed a string of sexual offences against a vulnerable teenage girl in Rochdale have been jailed for up to 25 years each.[/h] The girl, who has learning disabilities, contacted the police in 2012 about the assaults, which took place while she was aged between 14 and 18. She claimed that “hundreds” of men would call her, asking her to go out and have sex with them, between 2005 and 2010. The offences also involved other under-age victims.


The BBC reports that nine defendants, all but one of whom are of Pakistani and Bangladeshi heritage, were sentenced at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court today, while another man was sentenced last year.


Prosecutors said the white girl was an “extremely vulnerable young woman” who had “a very difficult home life”.


The girl gave evidence in two separate trials that lasted a total of 15 weeks, while seven other complainants, aged 13 to 22 at the time of the attacks, also came forward to testify.


Afraz Ahmed, 30, was jailed for 25 years for various offences including rape and sexual activity with a child. Choudry Ikhalaq Hussein, 38, was jailed for 19 years in absentia for sexual activity with a child and conspiracy to rape. He is currently believed to be on the run in Pakistan. Rehan Ali, 27, was jailed for seven years for rape and sexual activity with a child. Kutab Miah, 35, was jailed for nine years for the same offences. Abid Khan, 39, was sentenced to six-and-a-half years for sexual activity with a child. Mohammed Zahid, 55, was jailed for five years for sexual activity with a child. Mohammed Dauood, 38, was sentenced to 16 years for rape, sexual assault and sexual activity with a child. A 40-year-old man who cannot be named for legal reasons was sentenced to 23 years in prison after he was convicted of rape and attempting to abduct a child in relation to three victims. David Law, 46, was jailed for 11 years for conspiracy to rape. Mahfuz Rahman, 29, had pleaded guilty to three counts of sexual activity with a child at an earlier hearing. He was sentenced to five-and-a-half years last September.


Judge John Potter said: “Each of the victims of this offending gave evidence at one trial or the other. “They were subjected to cross-examination which suggested they were not telling the truth. Each dealt with this ordeal impressively.

“I have little doubt that each of the victims have been affected by your abuse of them to some degree, some far more than others.”


Richard Scorer of Slater and Gordon, who represented one of the victims, said: “In 20 years of acting for victims in cases of this nature, these are some of the most appalling, sadistic and vile crimes that I have ever encountered.

“These men systematically groomed, abused and raped vulnerable teenage girls to satiate their sexual desires. “We welcome the sentences that have been imposed. They reflect the horrific nature of their crimes and show that men who perpetrate these appalling offences will be hunted down, prosecuted and jailed. “I believe there are many more victims of these sorts of crimes and I hope they will come forward in the knowledge that men who commit these crimes will be brought to book.”

CINCINNATI (AP) — A federal judge ruled Tuesday that a suburban Cincinnati man is competent to stand trial on charges that he plotted to attack the U.S. Capitol in support of the Islamic State group.


"The court finds that a preponderance of the evidence supports that conclusion," U.S. District Judge Sandra Beckwith wrote. She noted in her order that a psychologist for the defense testified in a Monday hearing that Christopher Lee Cornell, 22, is currently able to participate in his defense. The psychologist had filed an evaluation last year concluding Cornell couldn't properly assist his defense, but has modified his opinion, Beckwith wrote.

Psychologist Scot Bresler, of the University of Cincinnati, who has met repeatedly with Cornell, said for the first time Sunday he asked to be called "Chris" instead of Raheel Mahrus Ubaydah, which he had adopted as his Muslim name. The long hair and beard Cornell had when arrested in January 2015 have been cut off.


The psychologist testified Cornell has anxiety and personality disorders and can be deeply depressed, and urged he be re-evaluated before trial because his competency could change.


Prosecutors filed a report by another psychologist concluding Cornell is competent, and also filed exhibits including letters from Cornell the government said show he understands the charges against him and can help his attorneys.





Cornell, held without bond, has pleaded not guilty to four charges, including attempted murder of U.S. officials and employees. His father has said he was misled and coerced by "a snitch." His attorneys could still pursue an insanity defense.

A retired army man turned Imam Sunday allegedly molested a 9 year old girl at his native village in this South Kashmir district.


Muhamad Jamal Teeli, 55, of Brah-Ronipora village of Shangus has been leading the prayers in a local mosque since he retired as an army man. He also used to teach Holy Quran to the local children at his home.


The accused has been booked under molestation charges and has been arrested by police.


Police said that the minor girl was molested by the accused at his home while she had gone to learn Quran. “ The minor girl as usual turned up at his home in the morning to learn Quran and while she was waiting for other students to arrive, Teeli spotting her alone molested her,” said a police official.


He said that the accused let the minor go only after she screamed for help. “The wife of the accused was not home either when the incident took place,” the police official said.


He said that the minor reported the incident to her family who later lodged a complaint with concerned police station at Mattan.

Police took cognizance of the matter and arrested the accused. “An FIR number 23/2016 US 354 RPC has been lodged and the accused is lodged in police station,” said a police official.


Meanwhile, as the word about the incident spread in the village, people staged protest and demanded stringent punishment against the accused.

A group of attackers stormed the home of Xulhaz Mannan, a staffer for the U.S. Agency for International Development, stabbing him and friend Tanay Majumder to death in the capital Dhaka on Monday. Mannan was a senior editor of Roopbaan, a magazine launched in January 2014 that takes its name from a Bengali folk character.


Police said five or six assailants, dressed in T-shirts and jeans and posing as delivery men, stormed Mannan’s first-floor apartment about 5 p.m. local time. The victims were stabbed in their heads and necks, a method used in attacks on other secular writers, bloggers and teachers in recent months, bdnews24.com reported. Witnesses told the website the attackers shouted "Allahu Akbar" and fired guns as they fled.


A police officer and a security guard in Mannan's building were wounded, police said. A pistol, five rounds of ammunition and some clothes linked to the killers were found at the crime scene, police told the Bangladesh national news agency.


"We have started investigation into the matter with utmost sincerity and hoped to capture the culprits at the shortest possible time," police said in a statement.

The death of a Muslim teen in December, which fueled wide speculation about an anti-Muslim attack, was the result of a fall that followed the teen’s first use of marijuana, according to a report released Tuesday by Seattle police.



Hamza Warsame’s death Dec. 5 drew national attention and sparked widespread speculation that he might have been the victim of an anti-Muslim hate crime, until it was ruled an accident a month later.

A report released Tuesday by Seattle police reveals details of the investigation that bolster the conclusion made by the King County Medical Examiner’s Office.


The 16-year-old Seattle Central College student had gone to a schoolmate’s tiny apartment in the 300 block of Summit Avenue East to work on a project on homelessness, according to the report released Tuesday in response to a Seattle Times public-disclosure request.


Video surveillance shows the teen and his 21-year-old classmate entering the building around 2:30 p.m.


The two went to the older student’s sixth-floor apartment, where police later saw what appeared to be legally purchased marijuana and a bong, the report says. Warsame told his schoolmate he had never smoked marijuana and would like to try it, and the two smoked together, according to the report.


A toxicology screen by the medical examiner found “relatively high levels” of tetrahydrocannabinol, the main psychoactive constituent in marijuana, in Warsame’s system.


The older student told police he thought everything was fine and went to cook some food, but that Warsame then grew “frantic.” The teen then started talking in agitation about his religion and how he might have put himself in bad standing, and then said he “needed air,” police said. Warsame opened the door and was off the balcony before his schoolmate could react, the report says.


A woman who lived in an apartment below called 911 at 3:35 p.m. after she saw a dark shape falling and then looked down to see a body on the ground, police said. Meanwhile, the schoolmate had rushed outside and was also calling 911, according to the Seattle police report.


Almost immediately after news of Warsame’s death spread, rumors about an anti-Muslim assault began to circulate on social media. Seattle City Councilwoman Kshama Sawant joined the fray, calling for an investigation into the death of the Somali teenager. On her blog, she wrote that anti-Muslim rhetoric had spiked after recent terrorist attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, Calif. “Some reports suggest he was beaten and thrown from the building in an Islamophobic attack by a fellow student,” she wrote.


Sawant asked why Muslims were being targeted and said, “We must come together as a community, united and clear that we will not stand for any threats or hate violence toward our Muslim brothers and sisters.”


According to Seattle police detectives, there was no sign of a struggle in the 21-year-old schoolmate’s apartment. Police interviewed the neighbor in the apartment below, who told them she was usually able to hear some things that happened in the upstairs apartment quite well, even making out specific words. But she did not hear any fighting or struggling on the day Warsame died, according to the police report.


Police said the medical examiner concluded Warsame’s death was an accident and police speculated he had perhaps tried to jump to an adjacent building at 510 E. Thomas St. that is 11.5 feet away from the Summit Avenue building from which the teen plummeted. Police said Warsame was 1.5 feet short of reaching the other building’s roof.
