A Fremont web developer who allegedly tried to join a terrorist group in Syria has been indicted by a federal grand jury, prosecutors announced Thursday.
Adam Shafi stands accused of providing material support to the al-Nusrah Front, a Sunni Islamic cell linked to al-Qaeda. The “material support” he’s accused of providing is himself. Here's a link to the indictment.
The 22-year-old pleaded not guilty to the terrorism charge in a San Francisco federal court, where he returns next week for a bail hearing. If convicted, he could face 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
Federal agents arrested Shafi on July 3, days after he tried to board a nonstop flight from San Francisco International Airport to Istanbul, Turkey, prosecutors said. Turkey is a common point of entry to Syria for foreigners looking to join terrorist groups such as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), according to an affidavit authored by San Jose-based FBI agent Christopher Monika.
Court records unsealed Thursday—and available here—indicate that Shafi made a number of phone calls to friends leading up to his attempted departure to express his fealty to the al-Nusrah Front, his willingness to “die with them” and his progress in saving up money for the trip.
“I just hope Allah doesn’t take my soul until I have at least, like, a couple gallons of blood that I’ve spilled for him,” he allegedly told a friend in a wiretapped phone call weeks before his arrest.
Shafi’s attorney said his client is innocent. It should be noted, he said, that prosecutors have not charged him with any violent crimes, but with intent to join a terrorist group.plied, according to Monika.

Man who lent gun to Boston Marathon bombers to be freed
A man who lent the convicted Boston Marathon bomber the gun used to kill a police officer three days after the deadly 2013 attack was set to be released from prison after a judge sentenced him to time served on Tuesday for drug and firearms charges.
U.S. District Judge Mark Wolf sentenced Stephen Silva, who was arrested in July 2014, to time served plus three years' supervised release for the charges that he pleaded guilty to last year.
Silva was not accused of playing any role in the April 15, 2013, bombing at the Boston Marathon finish line, which killed three people and injured 264, but admitted having possessed a handgun with its serial number filed off. He testified in March that he lent that gun, a Ruger P95, to Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who told him he wanted it to rob college students in Rhode Island.
Tsarnaev was found guilty in April of carrying out the bombing attack along with his older brother, as well as shooting dead Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer Sean Collier three days later. Tsarnaev's older brother, Tamerlan, 26, died following a gunfight with police later that night and it was never established which of the pair pulled the trigger to kill Collier.
"I would like to apologize for the crimes I committed. For he record, I had no idea that the firearm I lent to Mr. Tsarnaev would be used in the way it was," Silva told the judge before his sentence was read. "
I was young, dumb and thought I could outsmart everyone."
Prosecutors had sought an 18-month sentence, citing the defendant's cooperation in the bombing investigation. They noted that he testified that Tsarnaev, whom he had been friends with since childhood, had actively sought the gun from him, evidence that helped undercut Tsarnaev's lawyers assertion that he had been a secondary player in a plot planned by his older brother.
"You were at a crossroads and you certainly went in the wrong way," Wolf said. "You didn't just go in the wrong way, you got a gun, gave it to your friend and as a result of that, now a police officer is dead." Silva is the last of five people associated with Dzhokhar Tsarnaev to face criminal charges related to the bombing. Three of his college friends and a cab driver who had been friends with both brothers were in June sentenced to three to six years in prison for lying to investigators.
Tsarnaev was sentenced to death by lethal injection and plans to appeal.

Man named Jihad arrested after telling California police he left bomb in backpack outside their station
A man named Jihad was arrested after telling California police he had a bomb in a backpack. Cops in El Monte carried out a controlled explosion on the bag after Jihad Mufaddi Khalaf Haddadin claimed he had left a bomb outside their police station.
Jihad Mufaddi Khalaf Haddadin told El Monte Police he had placed a bomb outside of their station.
The 52-year-old told police he left a bomb in the backpack and reportedly made repeated references to "Jihad" Tuesday morning, according to Fox 11 News.
"Several officers that were working during that shift came out and confronted him,” El Monte police Captain Chris Williams told ABC 7 News.
“He was very cooperative, did exactly what we told him to do, but that backpack was concerning to us because we hadn't looked inside of it.”
According to the sheriff's department, the bomb squad quickly determined the backpack did not contain explosives and destroyed the bag.
It was later found to contain clothing, papers and some other personal items.

An Indian man has been accused of kidnapping and raping a female colleague for five days to force her to convert to Islam.
Engineer Syen Emad Hasan, 30, proposed to the 27-year-old woman but she rejected him and said her family would not allow 'an inter-religious marriage', police said.
He harassed her until she cut short a work trip to Dubai. When she returned home to confront Hasan, he abducted her, locked her up at his house and took away her phone.

'The woman told us she was forced to talk to Hasan as he showed her photos and videos of them together in Hyderabad, and threatened to send them to her father, said Inspector Ravinder.
He added: 'He [Hasan] also demanded that she send inappropriate photos of her.'
When she returned home to Hyderabad to confront him, he snatched her away to his flat in the al-Hasanath colony, Indian Express reported.

Police found the woman locked in a bathroom in a state of shock with severe injuries to her head and face.
'Hasan said they were lovers, but the woman appears very scared in his presence,’ the 'She Team' official said.
Photos and videos of the woman were found on his mobile phone and laptop.

A New Jersey school board called the FBI on a Muslim teacher after it didn’t renew her contract because, it said, she made a threat.
Sireen Hashem, who taught at Hunterdon Central Regional High School, filed a lawsuit on Dec. 14 in which she claimed she was let go because of her Muslim faith, according to NJ.com.
The federal agents told Hashem they were investigating a report by the school board members that the teacher threatened them and said “they would be sorry” for not renewing her contract, according to NJ.com.
Hashem’s lawsuit named the school’s principal Suzanne Cooley, district superintendent Christina Steffner and supervising teachers Robert Zywicki and Rebecca Lucas as defendants, NJ.com reported. “I respect the personnel confidentiality rights of all employees, and it would be inappropriate for me to publicly comment about job performance or personnel matters,” Steffner said in a statement. “However, I want to very clearly state that Ms. Hashem’s allegations against me are untrue. I have never made a personnel decision based on any improper purpose. The statements attributed to me are factually wrong, and may even be defamatory. It is unfortunate that the district and I will have to defend this case, but will do so vigorously, so that the real facts may be presented in court. After an appropriate review of the allegations, further comments may be provided.”
According to Hashem’s lawsuit a student posted to Facebook in early September that the teacher of Palestinian descent was “attempting to instill anti-Semitic views in students and warned that plaintiff may hurt students who did not agree with her.”

A teenage Austrian girl who fled home to join ISIS was used as a sex slave by the terrorist group before she was beaten to death, a former prisoner has revealed.Samra Kesinovic, 17, and her friend Sabina Selimovic, 15, became 'poster girls' for the death cult after they arrived in Syria in April 2014.
They appeared on ISIS websites carrying AK-47s and surrounded by groups of armed men. But by October that year, there were reports Miss Kesinovic wanted to flee having been sickened by the terror group's murders.

The Tunisian woman said the two Austrian teenagers lived together in the same house and were viewed as a 'sexual present for new fighters'.
Earlier this year, a United Nations official revealed a girl 'of Bosnian origin from Austria' - believed to be Miss Selimovic - died in fighting in Syria.
The two girls were children of Bosnian refugees who fled to Austria in the nineties to escape the war in their homeland. They reportedly left a note for their families which read: 'Don't look for us. We will serve Allah and we will die for him.' In April 2014, the two travelled, via Turkey, to Syria where it is thought they both married jihadists.
An Islamic preacher from Bosnia living in Vienna, Mirsad O., known by the Islamic name of 'Ebu Tejma', was allegedly responsible for the radicalisation of the two young girls. He has denied the claims.
He was arrested for his role in an alleged terrorist funding network based in Austria in November.

The woman had been breastfeeding her son under the cover of her burqa, in Raqqa, northern Syria when she was spotted by ISIS's feared women police force; the al-Khansaa Brigade.
Despite shielding herself and the child from public view under her full-veil burqa, the Al-Khansaa Brigade ruled she had been 'violating public decency'.

The al-Khansaa Brigade is an all-women militia set up by ISIS just over a year ago and functions as the terror group's 'moral police' in it's self-proclaimed 'capital' Raqqa.
Covered in black from head-to-toe and wielding automatic weapons, the group has been accused of doling out savage beatings on the streets of Raqqa and spying on its citizens.
They are said to mercilessly patrol the streets of the terror group's adopted capital and has previously declared children as young as nine should be married, women should obey men – who are their masters – and remain 'hidden and veiled' at all times.
