The federal government is in a position to control oil production even on private lands, by way of regulations. If Obama had been focused on tightening permit requirements, etc,. he could have choked domestic oil production. Instead, he allowed it to expand dramatically. Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing is open to debate, but the fact is Obama created a very hospitable environment for domestic fossil fuel extraction. That's one of the big knocks against him, from a liberal perspective.

Again, that is pure nonsense. Obama did nothing to create a hospitable environment for production. He enhanced regulations and increased the red tape. Saying 'well, he could have done MORE to hinder it, but didn't... therefore he HELPED!' is absurd.

Oil companies don't like to drill on Federal lands.. never have because there have always been more stringent environmental regulations and more paperwork.

No.. He put a moratorium on deep water offshore drilling because BP played fast and loose with the safety audits required so NO ONE could ever be held accountable.

After Deepwater Horizon my youngest brother was charged with redesigning the safety reporting protocols.. and he didn't work for BP.

Oil companies CHOSE to drill on private land, in order to skirt Fed enviro regulations. Obama did not hinder anything. Companies that sat on contracts for Fed land drilling, and did nothing with the land, lost the contracts.
