Batgirl’ movie gets ‘shelved’ by Warner Bros. despite $70M price tag: source

I saw the subject title and just clicked on....had I read who posted, I wouldn't have bothered given all sheet wearers bent to post any negative news no matter how tenuous the connection.

But let's get real for a second.....Batgirl in the early comics and the TV 60's show was caucasian and "straight". The recent TV Batgirl was gay, then black & gay....obvious pandering to specific audiences for that advertising revenue ("asses in the seats" as the old showbiz saying goes).

As for all the other Hollywood machinations....ehh, not really all that interesting to anyone not a comic con fan, directly involved or invested.

The cancellation of the movie was a business decision.

There are definitely more minorities in movies than there were in the 1960's, especially more lesbian characters. Catwoman was Black in the last Batman movie, and just about everyone is a lesbian in the Harley Quinn cartoon series. That being said, I doubt that had anything to do with the business decision.

...after her abortion and student loan forgiveness.
I give this a 2 on the humor scale. Keep trying!

I'm not so sure. There's the reality of "market saturation". Additionally, there's the business side of marketing.

Unlike the RWNJs who only like polls Trump likes and believe all others are lies, Hollywood uses a lot of marketing strategies such as polls, test screenings, etc. Many movies have been sent back for reediting after failing test screenings. As the OP link noted, Batgirl failed so badly in their test screenings they didn't want to throw another $30M+ into the hole after it.

The reportedly $70 million movie (the source said the budget was actually more than $100 million), which was doing test screenings for audiences in anticipation of a late 2022 debut, would rank among the most expensive cinematic castoffs ever.

Those tests were said to be so poorly received by moviegoers that the studio decided to cut its losses and run, for the sake of the brand’s future. It’s a DC disaster.

“They think an unspeakable ‘Batgirl’ is going to be irredeemable,” the source said.

'Batgirl' star makes emotional plea to save scrapped superhero film: 'She's always been an underdog'

One of the stars of Batgirl is speaking up about the future of the recently shelved superhero film. Actress and outspoken trans activist Ivory Aquino penned an open letter to Warner Bros. Discovery head David Zaslav on Twitter following a report in The Hollywood Reporter that "funeral screenings" of the uncompleted movie were being held on the Warner Bros. lot before the footage was placed in the studio's vault — and possibly even destroyed.

"As one of many who poured our hearts into the making of this movie, I ask that this measure be reconsidered," Aquino wrote, referencing the suggestion that Warners might destroy the existing footage in order to secure a tax write-down on the canceled production. "As much as I’ve tried my best to be strong these past few weeks, I’d find myself crying, for lack of a better term, from grief, and tonight was one of those nights."

"More than anything, it is a father-daughter story which hits close to home as my Dad passed a year ago, shortly before I booked this project," she revealed. "I was hoping it would resonate with other children around the world, grown and not-so-grown, who hold their fathers in the highest esteem and who could see Batgirl as a story of that special bond." Aquino added that she spoke with Grace the day word came down that the movie was being shelved. "[She] only had words of comfort and support. I’ve dared not ask since if she’s spent nights holding back tears like I have because she has had to be the face of our Batgirl family and has had to put on a brave face as a way of taking care of us the way she gracefully steered our film."

"There's no crying in Hollywood!"

OTOH, destroying footage seems a waste. With everything digital today, it seems some of it can be cut into other DC movies.

This is now obviously an organized effort to get the studio to back down.

We will see if it works.

Of course. They probably took a cut in pay for a share of the profits. What happens to them when there are no profits?

It's fucking Hollywood; it's all about fame and fortune. Celebrities and money. I love movies, but I have no sympathy.

We are more than three weeks in and we still have no idea what is going on, those who know are refusing to be honest with us.

The "Let me cry for you!" pressure is certainly revolting though.
