They had enough blacks to breed their own slaves!
Hey Margot...
One point I would like to make is that I think the things we remember in history (whether we are :British, Australian, Canadian or American, etc) tell us a lot about ourselves. You Yanks celebrate the 4th of July every year with Bar-B-Ques/Hot-Dog Sizzles, by letting off lots of fireworks; by dressing up in Red, White and Blue, or wearing caps and T-Shirts with the "Stars and Stripes" flag decals on them and so on - all sorts different things. This is because the 4th of July, 1776, was the day that the British American colonist formally proclaimed their "Declaration of Independence" from the British Crown. The "Declaration of Independence" written by Thomas Jefferson is
the founding document of the republic, and it is a magnificent piece of work. Not to mention the fact that the rebel patriots won the ensuing 8-year long Revolutionary War it triggered against long odds:- fighting the most powerful, experienced, well-trained, well-armed/resourced Military force in the world at that time. I understand why America officially acknowledges and celebrates the 4th of July or "Independence Day", I think it is a date in American history that fully deserves to be remembered and celebrated each year, moreover it is very important to make sure it is always remembered and celebrated.
If the 4th of July is commemorated and celebrated each year in America, then I think it would be a good idea if the, 1st January, were as well; because the 1st January, 1808, marked a critical turning-point in the history of the United States.
Why?
Well, because it was the very first time that Congress stigmatized, at least, an aspect of slavery as immoral, illegitimate and worthy of being prohibited. Equally, it did successfully manage to raise the issue of slavery itself - even though it didn't lead directly to the abolition of slavery. For instance, 50 years later, Lincoln was saying to the American public:
"You know, the Southerners claim they have a right of property in slaves. Well, if so, why is the importation of slaveswrong? Why don't they just keep importing slaves if it's no different than any other property? We don't have a ban on importing any other form of property. Obviously, there is something different about slaves that makes people, you know, feel the trade is illegitimate. And that is a condemnation of slavery itself. Right?"
Another reason that 1st January, 1808, was such an important date in US history can be appreciated if you stop for a moment to consider what would have happened if the law prohibiting the importation of slave into America were
NOT passed by Congress on that day. First of all there would have been hundreds of thousands more slaves from Africa and the Caribbean brought into America. This , in turn, would mean that the South would probably have grown more powerful - more politically dominant. And I think it's highly likely that it would have expanded slavery into Cuba, into the Caribbean and into Mexico. More slaves would have led to America becoming a "slave empire" (in a which many Southerners wanted); and that would
NOT have been a good thing. Right?
ANOTHER INTERESTING HISTORICAL FACT ABOUT SLAVERY IN AMERICA THAT MOST YANKS DON'T KNOW.
Did you know that Thomas Jefferson wrote a blistering, red-hot anti-slavery passage in the final draft of the "Declaration of Independence" attacking the INSTITUTION of slavery. He blamed the British Crown for introducing slavery into North America, calling slavery: the waging of war
"...against human nature itself, violating its most sacred rights of life and liberty in a distant people (the African negros) who never offended him (King George III); "an excrable commerce"; "piratical warfare"; an "assemblage of horrors", and such like In his 168-word anti-slavery passage written into the final draft of the
"Declaration of Independence", Jefferson didn't pull any punches.
Jefferson's final version of the
"Declaration of Independence" was given to a 5-man Committee for editing before it was to be put before Congress. The men on this committee included: Jefferson himself; Benjamin Franklin; John Adams; Robert Livingstone and Roger Sherman. The Committee did not cut the anti-slavery passage from Jefferson's
"Declaration of Independence." What we do know is that it was removed by Congress at some point between the 1st and the 3rd of July, 1776; and that there is little doubt that the removal of Jefferson's 168-word anti-slavery passage was fuelled by political and economic expediencies (there is no record of the debate/s that took place in Congress between 1st and 3rd of July, 1776).
Twenty years later, Jefferson was writing his autobiography, and in it he says...
"The clause (i.e. the anti-slavery passage he handwritten into the "Declaration of Independence"...reprobating the enslaving of the inhabitants of Africa, which was struck out in compliance to South Carolina and Georgia..." seems to identify which states' delegates were responsible for expunging the anti-slavery passage. However, Jefferson goes on in his autobiography to lay some blame on the North, saying:
"Our Northern Brethren also, I believe felt a little tender under these censures, for tho' their people have very few slaves themselves, yet they had been pretty considerable carriers of them to others." (I'm not sure at the moment what Jefferson is referring to exactly in this criticism of "Our Northern Brethren." - I will need to do some more reading into it all).
FINALLY
I am andAustralian and I have never been to America ,I did very come close to flying to the US to visit the surf beaches in Southern California when I was in my 20's (because I was told that there were 1000s of red- hot, blonde bikini chix there) but unfortunately I do not manage to get there

Despite that, I have always been very interested in Americaand what is happening there, and with the advent of the internet is has been easier to access your news/current affairs. One thing that has always struck me is that there is a lot of tension and division between Black (i.e. African/Carribean) Americans and White Anglo-"Nordic" type American. My perception has been that these two racial groups
REALLY[/B do not get on well with each other (to put it mildly); they do not integrate socially AT ALL, and just downright do not seem to like each other one little bit. And in a way the bitterness/resentment/hatred between the Blacks and Whites in America has become more expansive and deeply ingrained in the 21st - century than ever it was in the past, during, for ex, the era of Reconstruction or the 1920s when the KKK were at the peak of their power.
If I can make one partisan political remark, it is that I think as far as the 21st century in the US is concerned, Barack Obama bears a great deal of responsibility for the sharp deterioration in race relations between Black and White Americans that has progressively taken place. Why? One major reason is the fact it was Obama who VIGOROUSLY promoted Black Identity Politics (for instance through organisations like BLM Inc.) and it has had disastrous impact on BLACK-WHITE RACE RELATIONS IN MANY DIFFERENT WAYS.
IN CONCLUSION
GIVEN RACE RELATIONS BETWEEN BLACK AND WHITE AMERICA ARE NOT GOOD, IN FACT, ARE PRETTY BAD, GENERALLY SPEAKING (?), WHY NOT BEGIN A PROJECT TO PROMOTE 1 JANUARY AND A SPECIAL DAY OF REMEMBRANCE AND CELEBRATION IN AMERICA? THE LAW PASSED ON JAN 1ST, 1808, WAS NO SMALL THING ! I KNOW IT DID NOT ABOLISH SLAVERY IN THE US, BUT ALL THINGS CONSIDERED IT WAS A GIANT STEP FORWARD. IT IS SOME EVIDENCE THAT MANY WHITE AMERICANS WERE STRIVING TO "DO THE RIGHT THING", MANY DECADES BEFORE THE CIVIL WAR AND THE RATIFICATION OF THE 13TH AMENDMENT IN 1865. IT SHOWS THAT NOT ALL WHITE AMERICAN WERE CRUEL, BRUTAL BASTARDS - AND THAT, IN FACT, MOSTWERE ABSOLUTELY NOT. ALSO TO SHOWCASE THE 1ST OF JANUARY AS A NATIONAL DAY OF REMEMBRANCE/CELEBRATION WOULD BE A FITTING GESTURE OF GOOD WILL FROM WHITE AMERICA TO BLACK AMERICA.
Also, it would help a lot if your K-12 public schooling system (esp middle schools and high schools) began to adopt a policy of teaching young Americans the real, objective history of their nation in history classes (or whatever it is they call history classes today). Because for as long as toxic excrement blights the K-12 curriculum, such as the AWARD-WINNING "1619 Project" - a piece of faecal, leftist propaganda (written by a Black journal, Nicole Hannah Jones who was, at the time working for "The New York Time" things cannot improve. "The 1619 Project" is a divisive, phoney history of America's founding that universaly condemns America's white FEuropean founding generations as diabolical, brutal, cruel and wicked scum. It really is "beyond the pale." Moreover, it has been systematically and completely debunksd as a pack of shocking lies and "dog-shit history" by just about every eminent historical scholar in America. Despite the fact that the "1619 Project" has been proven to be riddled with basic errors of historical fact, Hannah-Jones refuses to hand back the "Pulitzer Prize" she was awarded for the garbage, and the Pulitzer Prize Committee have not demanded it be returned. This provides you with some indication of just how deep the rot is in the Media (i.e. the lefist Press like "The New York Times") and theeducational system in America (including the major Teacher Unions and the Colleges of Teacher Education). Fortunately, Donald Trump has recently announced that he will be having a legal team sue the Pulitzer Committee - THAT is how utterly egregious their conduct/incompetence/ political partisanship has been in this matter.
I'm starting to get angry, so I'd better sign off.
