Free college!

I would argue that we get much much better results than is reported as other countries fake there statistics badly and we don't. One example is we keep all students in the Curve most foreign countries throw out the bottom of the curve so they look better

The racist right has never wanted Blacks educated.

Free college, or free anything for that matter, is always equated to Blacks.

It's why they defunded public education and started closing down schools in Black neighborhoods.

And dems on the left, let them do it.

And why the hell would anyone want to 'escalate' rising college costs?

I would like to see matching programs for trade schools, which will deliver much more in the way of job potential upon graduation. And the courses are much more job specific. Unlike meaningless college degrees.

Maybe if he's actually read the article, he might have discovered that students applying for the free tuition must also fill out the FAFSA application; Tennessee will make up the difference after they receive their grants. So yep -- still free, but the U.S. taxpayers are helping to fund it. Just as we do for everyone who qualifies for Pell or FAFSA aid.

Here's a happy story for you guys: My oldest daughter was a stay-at-home mom of four till 2014. She discovered that her husband was having an affair. They were divorced. She enrolled in college and got a free ride; she just received her associates degree in computer science/networking this past May. She and the kids moved to Vermont this summer and she has a good job now working for a UPS office, full benefits, $22/hour. Granted that's not much for an expensive state like VT, but it's a fine start esp for someone who doesn't have student loan debt. So thank you, American taxpayers, for chipping in to create another tax-paying citizen.

I would definitely support that as well. I'd say the world needs plumbers, electricians, practical nurses, educated day care providers, and carpenters a lot more than we need English lit majors.

The program in the OP does state what you typed above. But...those same people would be applying for the Fed grants anyway, so the 'free' part that the state offers comes at no expense to Tennessee taxpayers.

$22/hr in Vt is pretty good starting pay. Did you say she's living near a city? Otherwise, Vt. isn't expensive when compared to other states. Granted, it's been decades since I lived there.

After 20 years in nursing, my GF is now wasting thousands of dollars because NY decided to funnel money to the SUNY system. So...if hospitals want accreditation, 85% of nurses must have a bachelors, as opposed to the associates degree that was necessary along w/the nursing degree.

Nothing she's studying has anything to do with nursing, and she certainly doesn't need the aggravation of dealing with homework/assignments after working a full day. I could see if they came up with a course that was nothing but advanced nursing curriculum. Learning about the French Revolution does nothing to make her a better nurse.

They live in Saint Albans, for now. They're staying with my middle daughter till she can save up enough to rent their own place. VT is pretty pricy especially compared to Missouri where they're both from. The taxes are pretty high, for one thing. Rent and housing prices are also comparatively high. But yes, great salary for just starting out! We're very proud of her.

That's crap, and that's exactly what was happening in Missouri when we left, too. The only jobs for non-BSN nurses were in nursing homes, physicians' offices, or managed care/insurance companies. But if they can insist on the BSN, with the current glut of RNs, that's what they will get.

Affordable or free education is hardly a "extreme left idea". And obviously in this case not even a Democrat one. Time to wake up and smell the coffee.

Indeed it would as it requires significantly more than the traditional high school education to be competitive in todays labor market and odds of making a middle class income based solely on a high school education are not good.

The real advantage here though is that community colleges have a lot to offer in terms of technical and traditional trades too. My late brother in-law received an industrial arts A.S. degree at a local community college in CNC machining and he made serious money as a tool maker until his alcoholism entered the acute stage.
