From the article in the OP. "Since Haslam, a Republican, pushed for the Tennessee Promise program in 2014, the idea of tuition-free college has gained some traction".
Save for the military. The ROI on this kind of thing is off the charts.
No one loses.
Shame you never finished high school, or you'd know how this is funded.yea, more free stuff. What deficit
Liberals have truly lost their minds
Hell...back in the 70's NY did the same thing. Guess how much goes to education? Here in WA, we established a lottery in the 80s to generate funding for education. The funds are now directed to the general fund (which is a giant black hole of unaccountability), and, so, education is left looking for other means of revenue.
Yea..the one about colleges being full was a nice one too.when you have to lie to try and create a fake reality it is just a lie
And why the hell would anyone want to 'escalate' rising college costs?Dog whistling here! You know those people “ who like free stuff”
Yep...I'm sure they cite rising property values as a reason. They promise the world when they want it approved...a la Disney...but once they get in, it's always worse off. Here in PA, our then Democrat governor legalized gambling, saying the proceeds would cut property taxes. My property taxes have risen every year since...
Shame you never finished high school, or you'd know how this is funded.
And you tell others to 'learn to read'? You realize we're discussing free tuition for community colleges in your state?Learn to read, Skippy! You must have one of them thar liberal public school educations
The Left wants to send these unprepared students to college where they can become burdened with debt, and fail to get a degree. But at least you'll have their money to pay those retired college professors 100k plus benefits per year for the next 30 years of their retirement.
You got a lot of old people to pay for, Millenials. You bitches better get to work. You also need to pay for healthcare for Boomers and pay down the National debt ... so stop slacking. Obama and the Left raped you hard!
And why the hell would anyone want to 'escalate' rising college costs?
I would like to see matching programs for trade schools, which will deliver much more in the way of job potential upon graduation. And the courses are much more job specific. Unlike meaningless college degrees.
The program in the OP does state what you typed above. But...those same people would be applying for the Fed grants anyway, so the 'free' part that the state offers comes at no expense to Tennessee taxpayers.Maybe if he's actually read the article, he might have discovered that students applying for the free tuition must also fill out the FAFSA application; Tennessee will make up the difference after they receive their grants. So yep -- still free, but the U.S. taxpayers are helping to fund it. Just as we do for everyone who qualifies for Pell or FAFSA aid.
Here's a happy story for you guys: My oldest daughter was a stay-at-home mom of four till 2014. She discovered that her husband was having an affair. They were divorced. She enrolled in college and got a free ride; she just received her associates degree in computer science/networking this past May. She and the kids moved to Vermont this summer and she has a good job now working for a UPS office, full benefits, $22/hour. Granted that's not much for an expensive state like VT, but it's a fine start esp for someone who doesn't have student loan debt. So thank you, American taxpayers, for chipping in to create another tax-paying citizen.
After 20 years in nursing, my GF is now wasting thousands of dollars because NY decided to funnel money to the SUNY system. So...if hospitals want accreditation, 85% of nurses must have a bachelors, as opposed to the associates degree that was necessary along w/the nursing degree.I would definitely support that as well. I'd say the world needs plumbers, electricians, practical nurses, educated day care providers, and carpenters a lot more than we need English lit majors.

$22/hr in Vt is pretty good starting pay. Did you say she's living near a city? Otherwise, Vt. isn't expensive when compared to other states. Granted, it's been decades since I lived there.

Nothing she's studying has anything to do with nursing, and she certainly doesn't need the aggravation of dealing with homework/assignments after working a full day. I could see if they came up with a course that was nothing but advanced nursing curriculum. Learning about the French Revolution does nothing to make her a better nurse.
So now republican pigs are introducing extreme left wing ideas? I can't believe that. I'll have to double check this.
I've been told this is a extreme left idea that would never come to light.
When I ask what extreme left ideologies are, this is one them,
The right always tries to compare the left with their extreme hate and ideology.
Smart thing to do. If other States don't follow suite Tennessee will develop a significant competitive edge in the labor force.http://money.cnn.com/2017/05/11/pf/college/tennessee-free-community-college/index.html
Excellent job, Tennessee!
I'd prefer it not to be funded with a state lottery ticket program, however. The desperate and dumb poor shouldn't foot the bill.

Indeed it would as it requires significantly more than the traditional high school education to be competitive in todays labor market and odds of making a middle class income based solely on a high school education are not good.A free 12th grade education has done a lot for this country so a college education would even do more
