Trump's Christmas present to America.

Hello Dutch Uncle,

Unfortunately true. The outlook doesn't make for a Merry Christmas.

Makes it a challenge, but being well aware also makes it easy to just block it out. Nice to kick back and relax a few days, maybe watch some football, exchange a few things carefully ordered in advance, crank the heat up a little. Life's good knowing that the future outlook is brighter. Looks like next year is going to just get better and better as it goes on, with a nice economic recovery by the end. Fingers crossed, anyway.

Toes too.
Infections are increasing all over the world. New strains are emerging. New waves are striking countries which had reduced infections to zero. The indications are that we will all be adopting dramatically different lifestyles until there are highly-effective, proven vaccines which enable us to mingle again.
The debate should not be about when we can all get back to doing what we did- but rather what are we going to do instead. People's minds seem blank- because they cannot adjust. Governments are too busy lying to us to publicize any strategies that they might have drawn up. Some probably haven't even thought about it yet.

Yes, sadly, there are far too many who keep hoping one day they will wake up and it will all be magically gone away. Or worse, they simply refuse to take measures, pretend it's not a concern, just go about their lives as usual. Mask wearing only when forced, don't even bother trying to distance, gathering in bars, walk right up to people in a store...

Here is some possible hopeful news.

The number of Serious or Critical Cases appears to have leveled off.

There was a slight peak a few days ago at 28,325.

Today it is down to 28,011.

That is a rough indicator of the upcoming death rates.

OK, I am seeing a good trend here.

Serious and Critical cases continue to drop.

Yesterday the figure fell below 28,000.

That figure has been falling for days after peaking at 28,325.

Maybe the Thanksgiving surge is easing.

But we still have some troubling numbers.

We just passed 18 million total cases.

And the Active Cases passed 7 million.

Keep on taking all reasonable precautions!

This CDC link from last October predicts a $16T cost for the pandemic. $4.4T for premature deaths alone.

https://www.cdc.gov/library/covid19/102320_covidupdate.html

  • Total economic cost of US pandemic through Fall, 2021 estimated at $16 trillion or 90% of the gross domestic product (GDP).
  • Cumulative deaths estimated at 625,000 yielding $4.4 trillion in losses for premature death.
[*]Losses from long-term COVID-19 complications estimated at $2.6 trillion.
[*]Losses for mental health symptoms estimated at $1.6 trillion.
[*]Lost economic output estimated at $7.6 trillion over 20 years.
  • Lost income from COVID-19-induced recession accounts for 50% of total losses.
  • The economic return on investment of a SARS-CoV-2 testing and contact tracing program was estimated at 30 times the cost.
