I didn't force Dr. King to say that Barry Goldwater was an appalling reationary and that the 1964 GOP convention was a hate fest of KKK'ers and racists.

I didn't tell Dr. King to write that tax money should be spent on social programs, and on not a vast military.

Dr. King was speaking of the social injustices of discrimination in America, and he did indeed think the government could do more to help the people, especially the black people who had been impoverished for so long. It's not about making you a "better Christian." It's about respect for the entity which endows us with freedom. Just basic respect, that's all.
