UAW On Strike Against GM Plan To Close Factories, Lay Off Workers, Despite Trump.

Hello John Barron,

In the mid 2000's Chrysler gave their executives a bonus of 100% then a couple months later told the UAW if they didn't take a pay cut in the next contract they would shut down plants.
They will not cut executive pay or profit no matter what.

Pure greed.

Hello Gonzomin,

Since 2007, auto workers are hired at 14 bucks an hour. I believe it has gone to 15 and change in the last decade. They make 16 to 20 an hour when they arrive at full pay. Their benefits have been weakened and protections crippled. Working in an auto plant is a tough job.

That's what the non-union workers get. If I was UAW I would be pushing for no temps unless they are paid as much as regulars.

Hello Celticguy,

As major stockholders, they do.

I don't think so.

That one raised a BS flag. I found a link describing the GM board.

Looks to me like all of these people are management. None of them have anything to do with the UAW:

GM Board of Directors

Unless you would like to point out which of these decision-makers are representing the UAW?

If you can't do that I am going to flatly reject your claim that the UAW has representation on the GM BOD.

Then thats on UAW. With their ownership stake they can demand it.

Hello Celticguy,

Right.

First you claim they already have a seat.

Then, when shown that no, they do not, you blame them for a decision which is not theirs to make.

It's OK.

I understand.

Some people have a hard time admitting it when they are wrong.

Best to check things out before you post.

Better to admit fault when flat wrong.

Lame to deny and deflect.

Especially with bogus claims.

Regulars get 16 to 20. The 14 ,now 15 is what they get for 90 days until they are hired or let go. https://www.glassdoor.com/Hourly-Pa...bly-Line-Worker-Hourly-Pay-E279_D_KO18,38.htm They work a lot of OT to reach 46 K a year. GM likes to fold insurance costs and benefits and every other cost involved with workers to make workers pay appear higher than it is.
It is like the top execs. Their base salary is extremely high, but their real compensation includes bonuses which are greater than the base. Includes stocks too. GM tries to downplay the salaries of those on top.

Greedy corporations like to use temps because they don't have to treat them like humans. Gets them out of hiring permanent workers.

I guess its just difficult to believe the UAW would choose to squander their influence.
In that case they got what they deserved.
And doubled now. I see they got their healthcare yanked.

Dontcha suppose if GM had sales to support additional output they would move to meet that demand ?
Fact is their outlook is shakey.

I thought BO gave the UAW the shares he stole from investors. That would have them striking against themselves.

Excellent memory. That is exactly what the UAW is doing.

They moved strikers to COBRA.

That is within their prerogative, but it is not going to help them in negotiations. And in the macroscopic sense, if GM no longer provides workers with health coverage then they have nothing to lose in voting for Medicare For All.

Oh they will provide WORKERS with coverage. They have fewer at this point in time.
But if they seek employment again medicare for all is a poir substitute for the Cadillac coverage they were accostomed to (pun intended).

Trump's America: Profits First!

"The union has been fighting to stop GM from closing auto assembly plants in Ohio and Michigan, and arguing workers deserve higher pay after years of record profits for GM in North America.

GM argues the plant shutdowns are necessary responses to market shifts, and that UAW wages and benefits are expensive compared with competing non-union auto plants in southern U.S. states. In its statement, the automaker said its offer to the union included solutions for the Michigan and Ohio assembly plants currently lacking products.

A person familiar with GM’s offer said that could include producing a future electric vehicle in Detroit.

It could also include turning a plant in Lordstown, Ohio, into an electric vehicle battery plant or going through with the proposed sale of the plant to a group affiliated with electric vehicle start-up Workhorse Group Inc.

A new battery plant could give some UAW workers at Lordstown the chance to remain with GM.

...

several Democratic presidential candidates said they backed the UAW, including Senators Bernie Sanders and Kamala Harris, former Vice President Joe Biden and Representative Tim Ryan. "

UAW workers head for picket lines in first national strike against GM since 2007

Buy no GM products until this is resolved. To do so would be unpatriotic and unsupportive of American labor.

This is like a child holding their breath, throwing a tantrum......go ahead, you are harming no one but yourself....you will eventually pass out or take a breath. The last time a strike by an auto manufacturer had any effect on the US economy was during the NIXON years and that industry made up almost 20% of the US ECONOMOY....today with all the NON UNION manufacturers.....its nothing but a hiccup. If they want to lose their jobs and go on welfare......allow them, its their right. ;) There are plenty of MEXICANS just waiting for those jobs at a much lower wage rate. The problem is not with the workers....but the greedy union, hell Obama gave them half ownership in the firm...what more do they want? The union thugs miss the days of taking union funds and building cities like Las Vegas.

Actually it is a better deal.

The health care industry took profits of $43 Billion last year.

That money is not coming from the rich.

It is coming out of the pockets of every worker in America.

America spends over double what other countries spend.

When we institute MFA people will be paying less.

That will be a better deal.
