I see they have earned billions in the last few years after getting concessions from the UAW. Time to make good on the people who built that.

As noted, the outlook is not as rosy.

General Motors said Thursday it had net profit of $1.1 billion for the first quarter of 2018. The Detroit automaker's pretax profit of $2.6 billion was a decline of $944 million from the same period a year ago. Want to end it, pass universal healthcare. I was really annoyed at the debate when the moderator asked if the Dems thought the union workers who fought for good healthcare should give it up for Medicare for all. The unions have had their healthcare chamfered year after year. Less coverage, bigger copays and they know what the future holds. Union workers are not stupid. They want to not have to worry about accidents and injuries destroying their lives.
Our companies compete across the globe while carrying the cost of healthcare and its administration on their backs. There is nothing that recommends our system.

Management is asking no concessions, merely the status quo as occurred with Ford and Chrysler. What makes GM special ?

They already GOT the concessions when GM was truly struggling to stay alive. Now they are trying to make them permanent and the union is saying no more tiered wages based on the date of hire. $29 an hour is not too much to be paid for building cars. Management has filled a lot of positions with temps making $15. And there is another tier that can never get to $29 under the current concessions. That needs to go away.

49,000 workers walked out at over 50 facilities.

GM can't run a business long without workers.

They need to get serious and make some concessions to the wealthy. This is about more than profits. It's about people and communities. It's about the heartbeat of America.

He misses sarcasm from time to time, but then again, sarcasm is not always the clearest when it is in text format, as opposed to interpersonal format, especially when it gets blended in with many liberal and/or non-sarcastic responses.

So they are going down the tubes paying what you want for them. They are surviving with reduced overhead.
Cant survive without labor.
Cant survive overpaying labor.
Maybe this time they do a proper reorganization where they can fix the problems that prevent failure ?

A lot of it is health insurance expenses.

Workers shouldn't have to depend on their employers for health insurance.
That's a very outdated, inefficient, and ineffective system.

The United Kingdom showed us that after World War II. Tax-funded National Health Service is the world standard, but far be it from us to keep up with the world.

In the mid 2000's Chrysler gave their executives a bonus of 100% then a couple months later told the UAW if they didn't take a pay cut in the next contract they would shut down plants.
They will not cut executive pay or profit no matter what.

Since 2007, auto workers are hired at 14 bucks an hour. I believe it has gone to 15 and change in the last decade. They make 16 to 20 an hour when they arrive at full pay. Their benefits have been weakened and protections crippled. Working in an auto plant is a tough job.

BINGO!!! All American businesses face this disadvantage in the world market.We gotta fix that.
