UAW On Strike Against GM Plan To Close Factories, Lay Off Workers, Despite Trump.

Trump's America: Profits First!

"The union has been fighting to stop GM from closing auto assembly plants in Ohio and Michigan, and arguing workers deserve higher pay after years of record profits for GM in North America.

GM argues the plant shutdowns are necessary responses to market shifts, and that UAW wages and benefits are expensive compared with competing non-union auto plants in southern U.S. states. In its statement, the automaker said its offer to the union included solutions for the Michigan and Ohio assembly plants currently lacking products.

A person familiar with GM’s offer said that could include producing a future electric vehicle in Detroit.

It could also include turning a plant in Lordstown, Ohio, into an electric vehicle battery plant or going through with the proposed sale of the plant to a group affiliated with electric vehicle start-up Workhorse Group Inc.

A new battery plant could give some UAW workers at Lordstown the chance to remain with GM.

...

several Democratic presidential candidates said they backed the UAW, including Senators Bernie Sanders and Kamala Harris, former Vice President Joe Biden and Representative Tim Ryan. "

UAW workers head for picket lines in first national strike against GM since 2007

Buy no GM products until this is resolved. To do so would be unpatriotic and unsupportive of American labor.

Same UNION who drove them INTO BANKRUPTCY

Hello COC,

That's fine but the UAW votes. The URAW doesn't. Republicans could choose to stand behind their word that they look out for workers, or they could just show their true colors instead. One way gets you votes. The other gets votes against you. Your choice.

Interesting point. Let the UAW vote themselves out of jobs. Pretty soon the only humans you'll see at the car factories will be in $3000 suits. The UAW can go on permanent strike and no one will care, especially the big wigs at the big 3. Oh sure, the unions might get the democommies elected, but they won't be able stop AMERICAN companies from doing what they have to do to stay in business, or else they'll take the money and run and laugh their asses off at you commies trying to run the S.P.S.P.P.U.T.P.#17(Socialist People's Solar Powered Pick Up Truck Plant #17)

That is not why.
Not according to the thread title.

They strike to get improved working conditions, healthcare and other benefits.
That's what I thought too. I never heard of striking to keep from getting laid off. Hope it works for them.
You can thank auto workers for making all the benefits that you get possible.
I don't get any benefits. I sign the paychecks.

I was buying Ford long before there were bailouts.......most people were......that's WHY they didn't need a bailout.......the last GM in the family was my daughter's Trailblazer.......it was always needing repairs......

Hello Celticguy,

Im guessing thats universal base income.
Who funds that ?
Please dont say rich people, that will never happen.

But of course. OK first consider just how rich the rich are now. Well, that is way way richer than most people think. Then consider that after more labor is eliminated, more profits are showered on the already rich, they are going to be FAR richer than they are today. Since they already have way more than they ever need, they won't miss it if more is paid into the system that must include a UBI.

Back to the subject at hand...

Obama gave UAW an ownership stake in GM so it bears at least partial responsibility for management failings.

Unions obsoleted themselves when they won federal protections. OSHA keeps them safe, wage rules prevent abuse. This strike us about taking the spotlight off the same sorts of inion management fraud that forced BO to take the obscene actions he took.

The unions made concessions to help GM avoid bankruptcy. GM is fine now. Time to pay the workers back.

Hello anonymoose,

No,, but I don't see how a strike would do any good.
E.g., soon I will have to announce that I'm liquidating my business. If my employees go on strike to keep me from closing it I'll just close it sooner. I'm not changing my mind. They'd just be out of work sooner.

You act like it is just one group at one plant. Not the case. 49,000 workers spread across numerous locations. They all walked out together. The strike could do them a lot of good if it gets GM to the table with some better proposals. People are uncomfortable shopping for a GM car while this is in the news.

That was funny. Purely fictional, but funny. I'm sure the workerless factory is in our future, I'm just not sure when. For now, building cars takes a lot of workers. Corporations have to remember they are employing people, not buying machines. Hard working people deserve to have good pay and benefits. If they are going to make a commitment to work, the company needs to return that with a commitment to employ. Right now, GM has a big problem on their hands. They need to do something. The workers are not trying to be unreasonable. They just want what they think is a fair shake.

Union member agree to stand up for one another. when one plant gets closed who knows which plant is next? They are not going to just sit around waiting. Talks of plant closures anywhere rattle workers everywhere. They are all striking at all locations. 49,000 workers not working. That should get GM motivated. If people wise up this doesn't have to last long and everybody can get back to work, the plants can start producing again.

They didnt avoid bankruptcy.
Concessions were simply to survive. They are NOT ok as they never solved the issues that killed them to begin with.

Please elaborate? I have heard that they came back just fine. Why did Dodge take the truck market away?

Hello Celticguy,

Please elaborate? I have heard that they came back just fine. Why did Dodge take the truck market away?

Had one or two ok years but have fallen off and future not bright. Why ? Prolly because its GM. Electric pickups aint going to help either.

UAW should take the extension as they did with Ford and Chrysler.

They make $90k+ not including benefits.
That proves government motors goes very cheap on materials.
I wouldn't own a GM if they gave it to me.

Trump's America: Profits First!
Why not? Capitalism works.
"The union has been fighting to stop GM from closing auto assembly plants in Ohio and Michigan, and arguing workers deserve higher pay after years of record profits for GM in North America.
Lie. The UAW is what is forcing GM to close those plants.
GM argues the plant shutdowns are necessary responses to market shifts, and that UAW wages and benefits are expensive compared with competing non-union auto plants in southern U.S. states.
There ya go. Q.E.D.
In its statement, the automaker said its offer to the union included solutions for the Michigan and Ohio assembly plants currently lacking products.
Well, they tried. The UAW talked itself out of a job.
A person familiar with GM’s offer said that could include producing a future electric vehicle in Detroit.
Again, the UAW talked itself out of a job.
A new battery plant could give some UAW workers at Lordstown the chance to remain with GM.
GM doesn't make batteries.
several Democratic presidential candidates said they backed the UAW,
Of course they do. The UAW is right in the Democrat party's pockets. This strike and the timing of it is designed to make Trump look bad.
including Senators Bernie Sanders and Kamala Harris, former Vice President Joe Biden and Representative Tim Ryan. "
Of course. They are socialists. The abhor capitalism, just like the UAW.
Buy no GM products until this is resolved.
Right. Force GM out of business so they can't hire the workers to build cars. That'll work!
To do so would be unpatriotic and unsupportive of American labor.
There is NO American labor here. They are on strike, dumbass.
