Trump has a Mandate

I actually think that by believing Trump, or any president really, has a mandate that it waters down the fundamental cornerstone of our republic which is the constitution. It implies that one man has the authority to decide the direction of the country and in my opinion that's not what our founding fathers had in mind. Three separate but equal branches of government with one being checked by the other. Our constitution is the mandate and its functions are clear.

Then he has a mandate from the Senate...not "The People". It's intellectually dishonest to conflate the two. Actually even that is not a mandate from the Senate as you would need at least support of 51 members of the Senate to make such a claim and even if you did, given that the Senate does not represent the people proportionately. It is entirely possible for the President to have support of 51% of the Senate but for those Senators to only represent a minority of the population.

As example of what I mean is that for many years the Senate was able successfully block civil rights legislation via broad opposition in the Senate but those Senators only represented around 15% of the total population. That could hardly be considered a mandate but Southern Conservatives claimed during that era that they had a mandate from the people to block civil rights legislation. They were wrong and ultimately the will of the people, that is a mandate from the people, to protect the civil rights of minorities was enacted.

The only mandate Trump has is from his supporters and if he tries to move legislation through congress on the basis that he has a popular mandate it should come as a surprise to no one that he'll probably fail.

You make this statement because in your view the constituents of those people would punish them for it correct?

I could do the same thing with the congress I did with the senate it just takes too long.

In our political system you are accountable to your constituents. The people of New York cannot punish a senator in louisiana by not voting for them and vice versa.

not endorsing or denying a mandate, but votes consolidated in a geographical location of a few square miles does not denote a non-mandate

what is a state but a geographical location of a few square miles?

I dont make the rules of the system i just analyze it.

Trump can legitimately say voters will punish those senators who go against him therefore mandate.

Like I mentioned the important thing is not whether you or me think it but the senators do. If you look at the way manchin and heidkamp and others are acting they agree with my pov.

Trump owns the Senate, you know it.

I think you're in for a surprise, as we all might be.

Slump not only stepped in some Republicans' toes during the primaries, he stomped on them with spiked boots.

There are more than a few GOP Senators who don't like him at all, resent him beating them using the scorched Earth tactics that he used, and don't like the idea of him as President.

There is already talk amongst a few of them, of opposing him on various measures.

In a backhanded way, Slump might actually manage to force bipartisanship in Congress, but not the way any President would want.... in opposition to him.

Could be fun to watch.

He doesn't own the Senate? OK. Make your case.

The trumpers can delude themselves claiming mandate and the libs can pull their hair out screaming NOT A Mandate and it doesn't change the reality that Trump and co are in position to do what they want. It really doesn't matter if you call it a madate, it's going to smell just the same. So quit wasting your time posting about it.

doing what you what aka enacting your agenda is a mandate :)

you guys are splitting hairs. It doesn't matter if he has moral justification or not. Politics is all about applying your will. On the stuff he agree with repubs on, it will be smooth sailing, doesn't matter how many occupy wallstreet rejects have to say about it

:tsuke:

tinfoil gets it

trump supporters believing this election shows a mandate are plain idiots. this was not about a direction that the country wanted to go, but about a direction they most certainly did NOT want to go.

The country had that in 2012 and elected the "wrong direction" anyway. People had enough on both sides (don't forget they had to cheat Sanders).

Its not really splitting hairs. He has the moral justification in the states I mentioned :) 40 point or 15 point wins will do that. 50 votes

I really wish Sanders had won the nomination, it would have been a much more interesting race.

Three GOP Senate defections across the aisle on any issue and they don't get to "do what they want".

Given the hard feelings Slump left in his wake, and the radical nature of his agenda, that is not an unlikely scenario.

the analysis i gave had nothing to do with republican or democrat but rather the number of states he won with 40+ 15+ and 5+
