The Social Dilemma

Has anyone here seen it?

If you want to understand why we really are this divided these days, look no further than media, social media..... I strongly recommend you all watch this documentary. you are a commodity that increases their profits the more divided you are.

Haven't seen it yet, but it's well rated and looks interesting. It's a very liberal premise, but still interesting.

It’s Fox News

Fox has spewed right wing lies for decades

Without fox the Republican Party would already be dead
True, true and maybe.

Even biased sources can provide useful information. All anyone needs is a good set of hip boots.

Yes the truth does have a liberal bias

Agreed because Truth is about freedom. Many of the differences on this forum are how best to achieve that freedom. Too many are selfish about it which is a short term success, long term failure.

That said, anything that seeks to limit the freedoms of others isn't "liberal" or an American ideal.

Turned it off with 20 minutes remaining. Made me sick. Sick because it turned out to be EXACTLY what I thought it would be before I ever turned it on. A documentary about the use of propaganda to slowly nudge people to think a certain way that ITSELF is using propaganda against you to shift the way YOU think. Old as time....the wolf in sheeps clothing. To someone experienced,....the TELLS are all over the place,...I have had training in this decades ago. But to someone a little more naive, or pretty young,... dangerous stuff. This in NO WAY is good for anyone to watch. Pure social manipulation, all it is. Some will KNOW EXACTLY what Im talking about with these statements. I salute you for being awake!

The liberal philosophy is built on truth

Just the facts

Most people seek truth, but not everyone looks very hard for it. Most just look within their comfort zone.

The movie is good and probably illuminating to some people. I'm enjoying it and about 40 minutes in with 54 to go. So far it seems a little Chicken Little using many of the same arguments people used about the lyrics in Devil music or violent video games.

A few great quotes so far:

“Nothing vast enters the life of mortals without a curse.” — Sophocles

“There are only two industries that call their customers “users”: illegal drugs and software.” — Edward Tufte

This one applies to JPP and all forums:

“If you’re not paying for the product, then you are the product” — Daniel Hövermann

Anyone doesn't understand that point needs to learn it. :)

An hour into the show (a combination documentary with actors playing a middle class family with teenagers) two thoughts spring to mind:

1. I like that Chrome or Amazon give me a list of the latest prices on robot vacuums because I've looked at them recently. It's convenient. I like that when I type in "climate change" it coughs up the NASA website because that's my go-to website for facts. If I'm looking for something else, I can type it into the search field. Not a problem.

2. Like television itself and video games (anyone remember Pong?), kids should spend a fair amount of time outside or at school; not playing online like a retired adult.

BTW, Pizzagate was accepted by idiots.

Finished the movie. A bit alarmist to sell a good point, but it's more about "be aware" not "don't ever do". Kids need to be more disciplined with it to ensure it doesn't control their lives. Adults should be smart enough on their own. If not, that's their problem.

as flame wars as this place is, we do interact on an intellectual plane as well that is more then just tweets
and it has threads - wonderful thread topic ( that we quickly derail)

China needs to be marginalised and contained before it's too late. Sadly I cannot see an old fool like Biden doing that.

Chinese citizen journalist, 37, hailed for 'reporting the truth' of Wuhan's coronavirus outbreak is jailed for four years

Biden's US Trade Rep is a diplomat from the US delegation to the WTO - but also part of Trump's USMCA Treaty

She's as good a pick as any. but she has to operate under Biden's relations with China
Hopefully with little kowtowing

A former China enforcement head at USTR who is fluent in Mandarin, Katherine Tai has expertise that can help the U.S. confront Beijing on issues like forced labor and intellectual property rights while preserving a functioning trade relationship between the world’s two largest economies.

Lawmakers in both chambers were impressed by Tai’s handling of the negotiations in Congress with the Trump administration over changes sought to the U.S.-Mexico-Canada deal that replaced NAFTA. Her supporters say tough labor and environmental standards that she pushed to include in that pact could serve as a model for when the Biden team negotiates with reluctant countries for other trade deals.

Crucially for Biden, both labor and big business groups in Washington have privately signaled their openness to Tai as the nominee

that is part of it, but there are still fundamental issues that have divided us for years irrespective of social media.

does social media provide a catalyst to make it worse? No doubt.

But it comes down to the simple fact that 50% of the country can't agree on how the country should be run. That is unsustainable. So instead of forcing 50% of the people to live unhappily every four to eight years, wouldn't it be best to just have an amicable divorce and divide up the property?

This relationship is not working. We do not agree on fundamental issues of governance like the muder of an unborn child, taxation, private property etc. Now we can continue on this path to eventual civil war or we can part ways amicably. The left can live in their socialist utopia of no borders, electric cars, no fossil fuels and taxing the rich at 90% to pay for it all.

The rest of us will live by the free market and not let leftists in for longer than two days

We have had a near-even split for a hundred years. This is something new. The split is getting , meaner and more violent. The right is taught to hate the left and the Dems. The lies and hate being fomented on Red stations and net sites is blood curdlingly violent . We do not have comparable sites. We are not like Infowars, Breitbart, 4 Chan, Parler, and the even worse internet sites. They are bypassing politics and straight into "they are enemies and against America.? That is so silly. CNN is no threat. It is as not scary as a news station can get. Neither is MSNBC. They are not teaching hate and violence.
We have never had a free market. We have over 1200 tariffs.

Ahh, yes. It's just one side doing all the dividing, the teaching of hate and violence. Then why are conservatives shunned from speaking on college campuses? Why are monuments being torn down? School and sports team names changed? You should look in the mirror, hypocrite.

You realize there are tons of lectures on campus (well, pre-covid) every day, right? Outside people do not have a right to come and demand a lecture hall.

Speakers are invited, they just don't show up. And how often do you see those on the Right protesting the speakers from the left (or outright banning them)? Who demands a lecture hall?
