The Science Is Very Clear: Schools Should Reopen This Fall

You got another losing position, bubba. Parents favor keeping their kids home, rather than exposing them to the virus. Its no wonder trump is losing by double digits, he takes the wrong position on everything.

What he's got is yet another right-wing propaganda mill. Popeye knows and cares nothing about science.

Wait a minute, has it not been the last two Democrat Administration that had to come in and had to bail out the Republican Administration they followed, and did so admirably, and second, it wasn’t GOP leadership that led to the majority of American cities earning the worldwide recognition they receive today
Of course, it's the GOP that is unfit to govern. Actually, both parties have failed and need to be replaced. The only reason to vote for Biden is that he's not quite as bad as Trump.

I really hope they do. I wish things like this wouldn't get political - it's too important. This is literally about America's future, and I think kids are really hurt by NOT being at school, interacting w/ their peers & getting the much more formal education that they receive in a classroom.

The discussion I've heard about it so far has focused largely on how kids themselves have very low rates of infection, and almost non-existent mortality rates. Which is good. But I haven't heard much said about the teachers, and about kids going home & spreading it to parents, grandparents and others.

As with everything, you have to take the lesser of 2 evils. But let's get everyone on the same page. Don't oppose masks and say we should re-open everything. Give people something to work with to take basic precautions. They should have some kind of barrier for teachers, imo - and plans to distance & schedule so that kids aren't packed into rooms.
That's all too rational for the righties.

You get it.....I have been saying for nearly a decade that justice demands both parties die for their multiple crimes of treason.

Sure it will, if elected Biden will have to bail out Trump’s blunders with the virus, create a national strategy’s to address the crisis, and beyond that, it will be slightly left of center Administration similar to Obama’s, don’t believe all the hype Trump and Fox is attempting to sell, seen the same scare tactics in 2008 and 2012
We're still seeing the usual scaremongering about Obama.

Really, so cities as NYC, recognized worldwide as the major American city, I believe the second biggest tourist destination in the US, is a “shithole?” Wow, they certainly then seem to have a lot of people fooled
Popeye has very little connection with reality. His head is stuffed full of right-wing propaganda. He's got no room for facts.

Which is exactly what Trump did, he didn’t come on and say he favored opening the schools, everyone is in favor of opening the schools, nor did he propose nor endorse a safe way of opening the schools, which is what everyone is in search for, but rather Trump came out said Democrats were opposed against schools opening cause they were out to get him, Trump made it political
Trump is paranoid. He's slipping fast.

You're more obsessed w/ Trump than the lefties.

No - all he had to do was say he wanted to re-open schools, and then say THIS is how we do it cautiously: wear a mask. distance. wash hands. And then have a real plan for how schools can stagger schedules and implement basic safety to assure everyone that we're okay to go back to schools.

Instead, we now have very lengthy "denial" montages from him - this is going to disappear, 15 down to zero, it will just be a miracle, we're through the worst part, it's only going to get better, this is just going to disappear, rinse, repeat.

I truly wish we had a leader for this one. We do not.
Trump is a lot of things, mostly bad. Leader is not one of them.

After scanning through this op ed that has nothing to do with reality or science I must say this is really disappointing. It's some screed about teachers unions, communism and other blathering bullshit with links to Betsy Devos as an example from science. Holy shit this is disturbing man. Fuck.

Sailor please consider the things I wrote. I don't have anything partisan about this. It's one of the few things I don't when it comes to Covid-19.
The op ed was just the usual right-wing paranoia and fearmongering that is the norm for what the right considers "news".

Yea well that OpEd is the farthest thing from science and I'm not saying that to insult Sailor I just read it and nope it's an Op-ed piece with rather questionable links.
And Darth, as always, totally misses the point. It's not just the risk to kids. It's that opening the schools guarantees a resurgence of the virus, putting everyone at risk.

I think you missed my point. I hope you read what I wrote. It's not the kids getting or not getting sick it's the spread from the kids to the parent/family and friends as well as the teachers and administrators and their friends and family. That is the issue.
BTW in Chicago kids from 10 to 19 and 19 to 29 are getting sick.
Darth always misses the point.

What would this antisocial misfit care about schools? Like any self respecting honest woman would sire his demon spawn....:)
At least not voluntarily. And women don't "sire".

Didn't you claim to be a healthcare worker who stopped working? Am I confusing you with another healthcare worker who stopped working?

Some healthcare workers kept working because they could not just shutdown. Others did stop working, because those parts of the healthcare system could just shutdown. It is not like you can shutdown an emergency room for an entire summer. Can you shutdown a school for an entire summer?
And the healthcare workers who kept working took precautions.

We do not have contact tracing in America, so we have no way of knowing almost anything about who is giving Covid-19 to who in America. So we come back to the question of what do we do when we simply do not know? You say risk it, but I am not so sure. America's been failing a lot with trump, and I am not in a risk lives on your and his gut feelings mood right now.

Foreign studies are telling us very different things depending on the country. Northern European countries with few intergenerational households say there are little chance of getting Covid-19 from children. Southern European countries with many intergenerational households seem to have better chances of getting Covid-19 from children. And then there are third world countries with no universal healthcare that are seeing actual deaths among children.

We have no universal healthcare, but I am unsure how intergenerational our households are.
Even if the household isn't intergenerational, there's a lot of grandkids visiting grandparents.

So, let's see, our resident Coronavirus genius has decided that:

a) It's a novel virus so we don't know much about it yet and
b) He knows EVERYTHING about it.

LOL. If kids are so resistant to the virus, then why are 1 in 3 kids in the Miami area testing positive for it. I am all in favor of opening schools, but it has to be done in a careful and measured manner. The statistic about kids getting infected should be incredibly alarming if those kids are asymptomatic and head into the classroom, it's a recipe for disaster. IMHO, schools can't reopen successfully unless rapid testing is in place, and of course the Trump administration has no interest in that because, you know, it will create more cases and the idiot in the White House can't have that.

Parents are nervous, and rightfully so. If it can't be demonstrated that this is a safe approach, they won't send their kids. And when the white house press secretary says that science won't stand in the way of opening schools, there are going to be LOTS of nervous parents. No one trusts this Administration, and it is having a devastating impact on both the economy and on the fight against the virus.
Rather than "No one trusts this Administration", it's: no one with any sense trusts this administration. There are millions with no sense at all who only trust this administration.
