When people stop becoming cops because the danger of prosecution for the unintentional death of some criminal who was resisting arrest becomes greater than the danger posed by the criminals themselves, and nobody is safe anymore because there are no more cops, society might be forced to rethink all this crap about prosecuting cops for honest, human mistakes.

I understand why somebody wants to be a cop in a big city.

Reliable civil service job.
Decent money ( six figures for many in the city)
Personal time. Health and life insurance.
Make political and social connections.
Excellent pension.

I'm concerned, on the other hand, about those who want to be a cop in order to be Matt Fucking Dillon or Clint Eastwood.
They're a real, serious problem. They don't even have to be racists, necessarily.
They can be, basically, just assholes.
And in well run cities, they often don't last long, or at best, get launched into innocuous assignments.

When we were kids, cops were part of our entertainment. They wore those slick bottom leather shoes that made it impossible to run in the snow. Plus they spent half the winter on a stool inside a warm Dunkin Donuts. Most of them were shaped like a doughboy and used to getting themselves in embarrassing situations.

I think that's right. I don't believe it was intentional. If anyone had an interest in proving malicious intent, it was the prosecution. They didn't even try, which indicates to me (along with Potter's reaction after she shot Wright and her testimony on the stand) that it was the worst accident I think that woman will ever make in her entire life.
