What 'faith' would that be? Are the millions of Americans of all races and faiths who support the removal of confederate stench also of the same 'faith?'
It may have escaped you but I'm black. :0) Black people don't support anything about the confederacy, nor should we. Not sure how that escapes you. AND, America doesn't need monuments to traitors and evil to know history .. in fact, future generations will know history .. real history far better when monsters are not portrayed as heroes and 'honorable' men.
Drag them out of their graves and kill them again.
History, not His-story.
Truth is, this is already a dead issue. Why?
Because money speaks louder than anyone else in this country.
Southern cities removing Confederate flags to make tourists comfortable
Last week, Biloxi, Miss. became the latest Southern city to order the removal of a state flag containing the Confederate Army emblem from the city’s public properties.
According to the Sun Herald, 5.7 million people per year visit Biloxi, and city spokesman, Vincent Creel, said he supported the order and hopes it will convey a positive message to tourists. "We don't think we should give them [potential visitors] any reason to reconsider their decision to visit our community,"*he said.
Tourism to Mississippi’s gulf coast makes up one-third of the state’s tourism revenue. It's also a thriving, $1.6 billion dollar industry, according to the Biloxi Area Tourism Industry Report. Harrison County, which includes Biloxi, was specifically responsible for $77 million in 2010—30 percent of the state’s tourism capital investment.

You really think "powers" are not rights?
Pretty soon EVERYTHING will be deemed racist/offensive/bigoted/-phobic.
You won't even be able to leave your house without offending someone. Just the mere presence a white person is offensive to blacks at college campuses.
Then the left will have their ultimate 1984 Orwellian PC utopia. Where everyone wears the same outfit, marches in straight lines, looks straight ahead at the floor.
This way no one can be offended.
Pathetic.
And of course we know the confederate flag is not a mere harmless symbol of "southern pride".
It was of course used as a political symbol of white superiority. And everyone knows it.
it's ridiculous..Americans willingly give up their history, so someone is not offended?Thus...."freedom of speech" applies only to those they share an opinion with ...but not to speech they assume to be offensive?
There were few if any Wehrmact Nazi's..
The average soldier in Germany did their duty because they had to, or for nationalism.
Which is about the same for both the Union and Confederate soldiers.
There were quite a few SS and Wehrmact soliders who thought their cause was honorable - aka, to rid the world of Jews, Slavs, and other subhumans.
Fuck off. You are obviously unaware of how the Wehrmact treated the people of Russia, Belarus and Ukraine. Not to mention how they treated soviet prisoners - worse than dogs. What they did at the siege of Lenningrad. The suffering inflicted on the citizens of the Soviet Union by the Wehrmacht is almost unparalled in modern human history. You really shouldn't speak about topics you know nothing about.
The myth of a clean Wehrmacht that was simply fighting for duty and honor, is a legend with no basis in fact. Wehrmacht soliders were required to swear an Oath to Hitler. Not to Germany. To Hitler. Do you think destroying and occupying most of Europe was just innocent German patriotism?
the Wehrmacht is the 3 German branches of forces, but when talking about Nazi's, it's set aside from the Waffen-SS or the officer corps..I guess the equivalent as we use it is our "grunts"..I don't understand your comment about the Wehrmacht. It was formed by Hitler and its members committed numerous war crimes and atrocities. They were certainly Nazi sympathizers if not card carrying members.
At the party's high point around 35% of the population were Nazis. Nationalism was what the party was all about. I'm sure you've seen pics and film of Nazi rallies with all the fervent supporters. Maybe these people turned a blind eye to what was really going on, I don't know, but if they supported Hitler's nationalism they were complicit in his actions.
Exactly. Their thinking the cause was honorable doesn't mean it really was. It just means those soldiers were hiding behind a smoke screen and denying the true motivations of Hitler.
Trying to recover from the punative terms of the Treaty of Versailles was basic German motivation.
I assume you know about bread lines, billions of marks needed to buy anything rampant unemployment etc.?
Hitler was a vessel for change..That's how he got to power -of course he fed off the darker instincts of Germans too but his political base with ordinary German people was recover from WWI's peace terms
one thing we must do in looking at history, is to put ourselves there.. that place and time.Like you I've read quite a lot about Nazi Germany so yes, I know about Versailles, the breadlines, inflation etc.
There was also the anti-Semitism, the concept of Aryan superiority, and the concept of Lebensraum. Hitler fed into the people's fears for years. He also considered the press "an enemy of the people." Most Germans supported Hitler and turned a blind eye to his atrocities. Goebbels's secretary just died a few months ago and she had no guilt for her years covering up Nazi crimes. She fell back on the standard excuse: "I didn't know anything, I was just a (typist, clerk, soldier, etc.)" Too many people soothed their conscience with excuses.
one thing we must do in looking at history, is to put ourselves there.. that place and time.
Germany went from a national power to a basket case..it was primed for a strongman like Hitler to lead them out of the wilderness.
Too bad they got a pyschotic monster in Hitler
the Wehrmacht is the 3 German branches of forces, but when talking about Nazi's, it's set aside from the Waffen-SS or the officer corps..I guess the equivalent as we use it is our "grunts"..
In one sense the entire nation of Germany was responsible for the rise of Hitler ( and because of the terms of the Treaty of Versailles) but you can understand how devestated the county was,and that caused the rise of nationalism
But the "true believers"(my words) were in it for more then patriotism/nationalism..
Those were the Nazi's that bought in the Third Reich, or Aryan Master race.
My contention is while Naziism at it's peak did run through all of German society, most of the people didn't really care about the ideology -just the prospect of a return of Germany to it's leadership role in Europe.
And those regular Germans- the grunts, the nationalists without the fervor of Naxzism were the great mass of ordinary German forces -what is referred to as Wehrmacht
Wrong. The Wehrmact was the German Army. The other two branches, Navy and Air Force were the Kreigsmarine and the Luftwaffe, respectively. So, now I have to question how knowledgeable you actually are about the context of World War 2 and Nazi Germany, given you did not know that fundamental fact.
You would have to either be Russian, or intimately know Russian people to know the holocaust of death and suffering the Wehrmact inflicted on the civilians of the Soviet Union. They were not some professional army living up to high standards of conduct and judiciously following the rules of war. They fully intended to annihilate the Slavic people, and either kill them, enslave them, or drive them into Siberia. I have been to villages in Byelorussia where memories of torment, tragedy, and inhumanity is burned deep into the memories of elderly residents. They remember all too well what the Wehrmact did to the Slavic people of eastern Europe.
It is true that not all Germans civilians or German soliders were enamored of Hitler. But that is a very low bar of morality and ethical conduct to achieve. The very lowest. The thing that makes Germans ashamed to this very day is that precious few of them tried to help their Jewish neighbors, and turned a blind eye to how their military was treating Slavic prisoners of war. Moral cowardice in the face of evil is never, ever, under any circumstances looked upon favorably by history.
The analogy between the Confederate Army and the Wehrmact is that both of these entities went down in history as forces that were used for evil. And while many soldiers were just normal human beings trying to survive, it does not excuse their participation is some of the greatest crimes against humanity this world has ever known.
