Tax the poor

Think the poor don’t pay taxes? This chart proves you very wrong.

One of the stranger conservative tax talking points is the claim that the tax code is somehow unfair to rich people, who are unduly burdened by the progressive income tax. "The top 10 percent pay two-thirds of the income tax," the Heritage Foundation's Stephen Moore notes in a representative piece. "And the bottom 50 percent — all Americans with an income below the median — pay just 3 percent of the income tax." Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) made a similar argument in his 2013 and 2014 budgets, which included a flat tax to make "the system more efficient and fair by broadening the tax base, letting everyone contribute to their government instead of a few people contributing for everyone."

Leaving aside the fact that this is exactly how a progressive tax system is supposed to work, this analysis has a big conceptual flaw: it only focuses on federal income taxes. That's not the biggest part of most families' tax bill — most pay more in payroll taxes for Social Security and Medicare, for example. And it also leaves out state and local governments, which tend to rely heavily on regressive sales and property taxes. Citizens for Tax Justice, a left-leaning tax policy shop with a strong reputation for careful modeling, puts out an annual report looking at how much Americans pay in all taxes put together. It reveals a tax code that, while still progressive for low earners, hits the uber-rich and the upper middle class at roughly the same rate:

You do realize that you come off as ridiculous as that meme you depend on, right?

Poor MAGA mook....you don't even have the intellectual courage & honesty to stand by your convictions and debate them. You only fool the joker you see in the mirror. Carry on.

Something like half Americans+Illegals dont pay income tax now federally, and likely not state income tax either....with a lot of them actually getting what are essentially welfare kickers. I dont remember the number but I heard it a few months back. It is almost my bedtime so I am not going to research.

And remember, if your single & under 65 and make less than than $12K, or a married couple whose income (minus Soc Sec) is under $14K, you don't do April 15th.

My state (TN) doesn't have a state income tax, but we have the highest sales tax at 9.5% (afaik). People like Ben Shapiro come here to set up shop, then just go live somewhere else. His "business" is headquartered here, but he lives in Florida.

Hence why that uni-browed MAGA mouthpiece is SO full of it.

An idea ahead of its time. IMO it is long overdue for the poor to finally pony up and PAY UP. Are we not ALL Americans? Does it not feel good and right when we ALL have skin in the game? Well,...this is the poors chance. Tax the poor, same as anyone else. They too have earned the right to take part in this great American tradition!

So what? The ones that walk through the borders are not even seeking citizenship. They make money to send home and then go back when the family is established.

All you've done is use 2 right wing sources that parrot the same myopic viewpoint and biased interpretation that my source contradicts with FACTS. Like most MAGA minions, you just reject any information that contradicts or alters your personal beliefs. Like your orange god, it's easier for you to just bleat "fake news" than deal with the complications of any aspects of American life.

Undocumented immigrants can may be eligible for certain benefits and can also apply on behalf of their children. They do not automatically get the full "welfare" benefits via our social service systems, as my link showed. Never did.

Categories of Immigrants: “Qualified” and “Not Qualified”
The 1996 welfare law created two categories of immigrants for benefits eligibility purposes: “qualified” and “not qualified.” Contrary to what these names suggest, the law excluded many people in both groups from eligibility for many benefits, with a few exceptions. The “qualified” immigrant category includes:

lawful permanent residents, or LPRs (people with green cards)
refugees, people granted asylum or withholding of deportation/removal, and conditional entrants
people granted parole by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for a period of at least one year
Cuban and Haitian entrants
certain abused immigrants, their children, and/or their parents [4]
certain survivors of trafficking [5]
individuals residing in the U.S. pursuant to a Compact of Free Association (COFA) (for Medicaid purposes only)[6]

What are you, fucking stupid?

Post #153 folks. Earl is off his meds again.

Sales tax is highly regressive because poorer people spend all of their money buying stuff while wealthy people don't.

At the end of the day, progressive income tax is the best tax and should probably be used to pay for almost every government expense including social entitlements.

my memory might be a bit fuzzy here, but weren't you one of those who were bitching about Biden weaponizing the IRS to come after low wage earners with the $600 dollar reporting issue and arming new auditors?

Biden is increasing the staff of the IRS to mostly replace the people retiring. The rest are to be assigned to audit the wealthy. Other than having it backward, you did fine.

last I heard, the wealthy are not prone to making 600 to 1000 dollar transfers all over the place............so, I think I got it right.

Nope. The reason we cannot tax the poor is because they have no money. The rate of pay has been the same for workers for 30 years while America has made a ton of money, almost every dime funneled to the top. Biden talks about taxing corporations and the wealthy. It is a good start.
