Fact Check-Years-old footage miscaptioned as if to show a ‘vacuum bomb’ in Ukraine

A day-time video capturing a dramatic bomb blast followed by a cloud of dust and debris has been circulating online since at least Dec. 2019; some social media users, however, have shared it as if depicting an explosion related to the Ukraine conflict in 2022.

This purports to document the Russian use of a thermobaric “vacuum bomb” to destroy a Ukrainian army base in the northeastern town of Okhtyrka.

The miscaptioned video has been shared by human rights groups and Ukraine’s ambassador to the United States, who on Feb. 28 accused Russia of attacking Ukrainians with cluster bombs and vacuum bombs.

Through a reverse search of some of the clip’s frames, Reuters found a version of the video dating back to Dec. 12, 2019, when it was posted on YouTube.

Fact Check-Photo does not show Ukrainian soldiers being greeted with flowers

Fact Check-Image does not show Japanese ambassador to Ukraine

The photo of a man clothed in Samurai armor amidst the Russian invasion of Ukraine is not the Japanese ambassador to Ukraine, Kuninori Matsuda, as claimed.

The image widely shared on social sites claims that the Japanese ambassador had his great-grandfather’s samurai sword and traditional armor delivered to him from Tokyo, Japan. The ambassador was said to assert that “the samurai must protect the country in which they live in.”

The image was initially published by Ukraine’s ambassador to Japan, Sergiy Korsunsky, who is the man pictured.

The caption reads, “We know what we are fighting for. How about Russia?”.

I have been pointing out for days that a lot of the so-called reporting on this war is nothing but pro-Ukrainian propaganda.

Fact Check-Image of Vitali Klitschko with machine gun is from a 2021 training day

A 2021 image of former heavyweight champion boxer Vitali Klitschko in military garb has been falsely linked on social media to him saying he would take up arms to defend Ukraine from the Russian invasion.

The photo shows Klitschko, who is currently serving as Kyiv’s mayor, in combat dress, down on one knee and holding a machine gun.

A 2012 video of a girl confronting Israeli soldiers has been misidentified with Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

The clip, shared with captions in English, has had millions of views, and has been described as showing a Ukrainian girl telling a Russian soldier to “go back to your country”.

Let me tell you how wars work. The first report is always wrong.

The battle in Ukraine seems to be one of the most covered and worst covered events in history.

You cannot spend more than two minutes on social media without crossing paths with a snippet of shaky cell phone footage of a Russian tank burning or some heroic story of sturdy Ukrainian resistance.

You have self-described "experts" everywhere trying to tell you what’s happening.

Maybe you think the Ukrainians are winning, that their counterattacks are driving out the Russian invaders.

There are plenty of sources saying 2800 or 5300 or some other oddly large and specific number of Russian soldiers are dead. All hail the coming victory!

Well, we’ll see.

But I understand that I, like you, am a target of information operations by Ukrainians, Russians, and even Americans. Get woke to it.

All that exciting footage? What do you know about where it was shot, or when? Nada. Zip. Zero.

We’ve seen people trying to pass off simulator footage as real battle video.

We’ve seen explosions and fires without context. What caused them? Who knows when all you have is the label on the video?

All those Russian tanks on fire? Well, guess what kind of equipment the Ukrainians use.

Don't believe a damn thing you see or hear right now.

The Ukrainian military said on Feb. 24 that five Russian planes and a Russian helicopter were shot down in the Luhansk region. It has not been confirmed, however.
