I think it is an extension from the Brits and their empire. Pretty much all the "children" of Britlandia think they are special and entitled to some freedoms that others don't. Including ex-pats living in Hong Kong. This is particularly displayed in their weird Amerophile oddities who are both drawn to Americans and "hate" them at the same time. They spend an inordinate amount of time speaking with Americans while at the same time trying to devalue them with snipey comments on websites like this one about how they should act.

While their contributions are great when they are speaking of their own opinion, their silly comments about Americans only underline the fact that they simply don't know us very well and base all their experience on TV or on the few they meet overseas.

I have to say most Americans I've met overseas in SE Asia, Europe and the UK have been interesting people. I don't know if it is a case of travel broadens the mind or if it takes a certain type of person to make the trip in the first place.

They are a bit like us. There are good and bad. The good tend to be a little quieter than the bad. Oh... perhaps they are Canadians.

The fact is that many Americans one meets are quite full of themselves and, on a forum such as this, filled as it is by the strange, wierd and wonderful, we can go someway to redressing the balance. But every time an American gets too close with his or her 'Gee, Ah jurst lurve your quaint British accent' I look about me for a weapon and do my best to quell the intense desire to physically main them by wrapping their flapping tongue round their own bollocks and forcing them to drink warm English beer.
I suppose it is, to some extent, that fatherhood thing. They are badly behaved like children and deserve a sharp smack and a little time to make it all better.

The only time I ever had anybody say anything about my accent was in a restaurant in Reston, Virginia about twenty odd years ago. The waitress actually said that I had a bit of an accent and she couldn't place it, that was after she reeled off all the specials for the day. I only found it funny because she had a very pronounced southern drawl and she seemed to be totally unaware of the fact. Wasn't all bad though, she had stonking pair of tits I seem to recall.

To the contrary, I believe many of the stories in the Bible are metaphoric and told in a way to be entertaining while emphasizing a moral or principle. "Metaphoric" means that something isn't intended "literally" ....I feel I need to explain these big words to you..."

Then you wrote about Islam: "It was a religion created centuries AFTER Judaism, AFTER Christianity, for the sole purpose and intent of opposing Jews and Christians and destroying their religions."

So why is it that the Christian book can be metaphorical, but not the Muslim book?

I never said the Bible was metaphoric and the Koran was not... I said I believe many of the stories in the Bible are metaphoric... that doesn't mean "the Bible is metaphoric" does it? And I said the Muslim religion was created to oppose and ultimately destroy Judaism and Christianity.... that doesn't change, whether other people agree or disagree about stories being metaphoric or literal.

We had this dude in boot camp with the thickest southern accent I ever heard that was blissfully unaware of it and sure he simply didn't have one. To him he clearly sounded like the old announcer dudes that used to be on every commercial before they decided to hire fake brit accents for their cartoonish geckos...

There was one night he was shouting at us for some reason and none of us could understand him... We were all laughing so hard and he couldn't figure out why. Then some dude let it out that we couldn't understand him due to his accent, and he shouted... In that thick ass accent "I ain't got no accent!"

Which of course made us all laugh all the more...

That reminds me of when I was an undergrad. We had an Indian prof in the Chem department who's accent was so horrible that students were doing poorly or flunking his class cause they couldn't understand his accent. He got pissed at our class cause about every few minutes someone was raising their hand to ask him to repeat what he had said cause they couldn't understand it. You know how it is at research universities. The administration didn't give a flying crap about student complaints.
