His pitch to voters is I've been massively successful and I am so wealthy that I can self fund and I can't be bought.
First, I am not disagreeing with you, cawacko, I know you were simply quoting his pitch.
But let's take a peek at that claim of his. Trump is not paying for his own campaign. At the start, he
loaned his political operation $1.8 million. By October he contributed another $104,829.27, and he had also received $3.9 million from donors, which accounted for the vast majority of the $5.8 million his campaign had taken in by then. His campaign website features a prominent “donate” button on its homepage. Trump has spent $5.4 million, and interestingly, about one-quarter of his spending has gone to Trump-owned entities (mainly his private jet company).
He will receive every penny of his 'loan' back from his campaign. The windfall income to his own companies means that he will actually profit from his presidential bid. His claim that he isn't funded by super-pacs is about as valid as his claim that he is self-funded, and that he is not soliciting donations. He is soliciting donations, and he is soliciting as hard as he can. Political Action Committees that favor Trump number at least 16, according to the Federal Election Commission data released electronically on Thursday, April 21, 2016, and they had raised $51,161,113, at that point. Interestingly, at that same point, anti-Trump pacs had also raised $32,586,990.
While Trump is laughing at a $7.90 donation from little old lady that he doesn't have the heart to send back, he is winking at his accountant.
