Now that Rep. Weiner has done the right thing, should Sen. Vitter follow suit?

Louisiana Sen. David Vitter, whose telephone number was disclosed by the so-called "D.C. Madam" accused of running a prostitution ring, says he is sorry for a "serious sin" and that he has already made peace with his wife.

"This was a very serious sin in my past for which I am, of course, completely responsible," Vitter said in a printed statement.

"Several years ago, I asked for and received forgiveness from God and my wife in confession and marriage counseling. Out of respect for my family, I will keep my discussion of the matter there, with God and them. But I certainly offer my deep and sincere apologies to all I have disappointed and let down in any way."

The Republican senator's spokesman, Joel Digrado, confirmed the statement in an e-mail to The Associated Press.

Deborah Jeane Palfrey is accused by federal prosecutors of racketeering by running a prostitution ring that netted more than $2 million over 13 years, beginning in 1993.

:dunno:

If Weiner had just said, immediately after he tweeted that, "Oops, private joke made public!" rather than, "They are teh Hacksors! That Breitbart is baaad!" I don't think he would have had to resign.

It's the coverup... In this case, he went to a prostitute before he was elected, he confessed to his wife beforehand... Then later a Madam decides to make it a public thing, what does Vitter do?

Well, he certainly didn't blame hackers... according to your story he simply admitted it.

Do you think that he should resign?

I don't think he should resign, and I think the GOP should run national ads showing people what a bunch of cry-baby tit-for-tat fucktards are running the Democrat party. Weiner was forced to resign, so now we gotta bring down a Republican, so it is "fair!" Give me a break! You people need to grow the fuck up!

i think that there is a double standard

if a senator does it, then it is swept under the carpet, but if a representative does it then all hell breaks loose...depending on what is happening in the news at the time

oh well

in reply to your question, yes

Bill Clinton and Barack Obama admitted to taking cocaine before they served as President. Obviously, that action (breaking the law) didn't disqualify them from being President. Correct?

I think there is a difference between what a person did before they were in office and what they do once they are in office. We have been discussing behavior of people while in office.

First, they weren't in office and second, they weren't caught and prosecuted. I note that you used two Dems as your example but left out bush and other repubs who also used illegal drugs.

But my real point is, why the double standard? Who makes the decision on which people should resign and what criteria do they use?

The Weiner scandal was made for the press. There were pictures. There were chat transcripts. There are women giving interviews. That's why he resigned. Because let's get real, having perfectly legal consensual steamy chats and sending junk shots is a far cry from ordering hookers from the floor of the House of Representatives.

There was nothing at all salacious about Senator John Ensign's C Street prayer partnerships. That must be why I don't seem to be able to find over a dozen threads mocking Senator Ensign and/or demanding/rejoicing over his resignation.

Personally I think their constituencies are who makes that choice. I said as much about Weiner. When Weiner's story first broke, all it was was one shot of tightie whities, there was certainly no reason for a resignation. But as it kept going, and we heard about 16 year-olds in Europe, porn stars, saw pictures of his actual junk, etc...

This story was definitely never going to end, was definitely a distraction, and made Weiner a national joke. I'm with the President, if it were me, I would resign if I had done something like that and it was becoming a public affair. However, I never called for Weiner's resignation, nor would I.

Not as long as the wiener jokes held out, eh?
