Perry: "I Don't Think You Have a Heart" If You Oppose In-State Tuition for Children of Illegal Immigrants

uring Thursday night's Republican presidential debate, Mitt Romney, Michele Bachmann, Newt Gingrich, and Rick Santorum all took shots at Rick Perry's record on illegal immigration. Bachmann said that Texas's law allowing in-state tuition for the children of illegal immigrants acted like a "magnet" for illegal immigrants. Perry's response was forceful and personal. "I don't think you have a heart," Perry told his critics.

"If you say that we should not educate children who come into our state for no other reason than that they've been brought their through no fault of their own, I don't think you have a heart," Perry said. "We need to be educating these children because they will become a drag on our society. I think that's what Texans wanted to do. Out of 181 members of the Texas legislature when this issue came up [there were] only four dissenting votes. This was a state issue. Texas voted on it. And I still support it today."

I have to agree with Perry on this issue. It's the rational, logical, correct and humane thing to do. Don't visit the sins of the father upon his children.

To even attack Perry on this issue is political suicide for his opponents. Who ever is nominated has and i mean HAS to win Florida with it's huge Latino/immigrant population. These sort of anti immigrant attacks on Perry may be throwing raw meat to the base but from a electoral stand point it's politically stupid. Republicans can't realistically expect to win the Presidency if they alienate Latinos.

Sounds like Rove is pimping for Perry. Perry is too stupid to come up with this on his own, and this particular ploy has deep neo-con tendrils running through it.

Oh that's non-sense Dune. Perry might be a far cry from having Obama's intellect and academic credentials and he may have flunked out of organic chemistry but he's not a complete idiot either.

None of them are.. It's this era of the politics of personal destruction that we live in. It sucks.

You really think anything is worse than it used to be?

Charles Sumner (January 6, 1811 – March 11, 1874) was an American politician and statesman from Massachusetts. An academic lawyer and a powerful orator, Sumner was the leader of the antislavery forces in Massachusetts and a leader of the Radical Republicans in the United States Senate during the American Civil War and Reconstruction, working to punish the ex-Confederates and guarantee equal rights to the Freedmen.
Sumner changed his political party several times, gaining fame as a Republican. One of the most learned statesmen of the era, he specialized in foreign affairs, working closely with Abraham Lincoln to keep the British and the French from intervening on the side of the Confederacy during the Civil War. He devoted his enormous energies to the destruction of what he considered the Slave Power, that is the efforts of slave owners to take control of the federal government and ensure the survival and expansion of slavery.
In 1856, South Carolina Representative Preston Brooks nearly killed Sumner on the Senate floor for ridiculing slaveowners as pimps in his vitriolic denunciation of the "Crime against Kansas." After three years of medical treatment Sumner returned to the Senate as the war began. He became the chief Senate spokesman on foreign affairs, and a leader of the Radical Republicans who sought to destroy slavery and radically transform the South. As the chief Radical leader in the Senate during Reconstruction, 1865–1871, Sumner fought hard to provide equal civil and voting rights for the freedmen on the grounds that "consent of the governed" was a basic principle of American republicanism, and to block ex-Confederates from power so they would not reverse the North's victory in the Civil War. Sumner, teaming with House leader Thaddeus Stevens, defeated Andrew Johnson's reconstruction plans and imposed Radical views on the South. In 1871, however, he broke with President Ulysses Grant. Grant's Senate supporters then took away Sumner's power base, his committee chairmanship. Sumner concluded that Grant's corrupt despotism and the success of Reconstruction policies called for new national leadership. He opposed Grant's reelection by supporting the Liberal Republican candidate Horace Greeley in 1872 and lost his power inside the

And this;

The Burr–Hamilton duel was a duel between two prominent American politicians, the former Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton and sitting Vice President Aaron Burr, on July 11, 1804.[SUP][1][/SUP] At Weehawken in New Jersey, Burr shot and mortally wounded Hamilton. Hamilton was carried to the home of William Bayard on the Manhattan shore, where he died at 2:00 p.m. the next day.

Clearly Obama is smarter than Perry plays at being.

I resent the dumbing down to the lowest common domonator that the Republican nominees always seem to do. They are either dumb or pretend to be, to me both make me not want them to be president.

I know he was editor of the Harvard Law Review, thats a signifigant academic credential.

LMAO.... funny how that is pretty much the ONLY 'credential' people quote. How about his grades at OC? or at Harvard? Being named editor doesn't mean squat in my opinion, though I acknowledge it is supposedly a high honor among liberals.

I know enough to know that people with grades like Perry's don't get named editor of the Harvard Law Review. In fact, they don't get into Harvard Law School in the first instance.

You mean people with VIEWS like Perry's. Very similar to the Nobel Peace Prize... you really don't have to DO anything, you just have to believe and say what they like.

And just an FYI, Chief Justice John Roberts is a former editor of the Harvard Law Review so I'm not sure your ideological point is based in fact.

Right, and that is a little too Rovian of a platform to not have come from the guy who got the last idiot texas governor elected.
The neo-conesque piece is that GOP needs illegals to depress wages. Allowing anchor children access to lowlevel education capable of proving a larger pool for low paying bottom of the rung management jobs is a small price and allows better comunication between the serfs and upper management as a bonus.

This coupled with your points above clearly indicates the mastermind of Karl Rove.

Thats not true, on both counts. People who dont know what they are talking about should not spout off. I was on a law journal and you do have to do SOMETHING to get on it. In my case you had to be in the top 20% of your class for Law Journal and top 10% for Law Review.

Are you really going to make a play between Obama and Perry's intelligence? You are kidding right? Let it go.

Rove is smart as hell. Obama is smart as hell. Perry, not so much. End of story.
