I see no reason why we can't tighten the national belt *and* raise taxes on the uber wealthy to fund the programs that make life better for all of us, not just them. It isn't just one thing or the other.

Like another poster, whenever I hear "government is wasteful" I immediately tune out.

As if giving the CEO of McDonald's a $30M golden parachute because he fucked a subordinate isn't wasteful spending....

Social security is the direct transfer of money from the pockets of younger generations to provide for the support of older generations in their retirement. That is unequivocally a pure form of social welfare.

And what happens when the politicians realize that they can't fund the programs after taxing the wealthy? What if it's not enough? Who do you tax then? You really think the government projections are accurate? Do you think the politicians care? All they want is to get elected or re-elected. They don't care if the programs are funded or if they work. They just want their names on it so they can put in their campaign ads: "Hey look what I did. I supported this bill that will help you. Vote for me".

Are you a democrat? Do you follow JFK's creed "Ask not what your country can do for you..."? I do. It's one of the most powerful quote a US politician has ever said imho and it's the foundation of democracy imho.

They are projections. They are estimates. They involve billions/trillions of dollars. Do you have any idea how inaccurate they can be? They involve estimations, approximations and rough calculations. We're dealing with the economy here. Do you know how their plans will affect the economy? Any idea? Of course you don't. Nobody does because the economy is a big bag of unknowns. There are too many factors that affect the economy that no one knows what it will do. Sure, many speculate and some get it right occasionally. If they do, they're lucky.

If you know what caused the 2008 mortgage meltdown, why did it happen? Why didn't those that caused it know it would happen? You can put your faith in the government to fix the problems in your life. I choose to live by JFK's creed: "Ask not...".
