We assholes write letters, sign petitions and donate money to women in other countries. WTH do you think we're supposed to do, fly in and engage in arm-to-arm combat?

To my mind, whenever American men engage in this meme, (and it's very popular with sexists as I pointed out a couple of weeks ago when the board misogynist engaged in it via Ireland), it's not about them wanting us to make things better for these women...it's about them saying STFU BITCH and be happy we don't bury you in a fucking hole and stone you to death for yapping or fucking, or wearing that.

And I truly believe that's the message.

I can believe it just because of the absurdity of their position. What are they doing for these women, besides opening up their pie holes on an anonymous forum.

Darla's standard response seems to be that it is cultural imperialism to interfere or even highlight the awful conditions for people in other countries including no doubt children forced into sex slavery in India and Pakistan. My late brother lived in the foothills of the Himalayas in Himachal Pradesh back in the late '80s and he told me about the awful conditions then. Unfortunately much of it is a result of the caste system which is still very part of everyday life for the poor in India. Sati still happens on occasion in India even though it was banned by the British in the early 19th century.
