That's ridiculous. I, Darla and other liberals have been complaining about US policies in other countries for as long as we've been on forums. Why do you think the treatment of foreign women doesn't bother us?

Conditions for women in those countries have been awful for centuries. The US may not do enough about it but neither do other countries and you know why? Because people (women) are less important to our governments than resources.

If we had rice paddies here, women would be working in them. Just like the women here work in cranberry bogs or harvest fruits and vegetables. The Thai climate is conducive to growing rice and I believe it's a major export. I don't see what this has to do with American women. How would American men cope with cutting sugar cane as their lives' work? I think it's really unfair to compare women's jobs like this.

As you know I am not shy blaming the US for many things but I really cannot see how the caste system is the fault of the US. Disgusting practices like child prostitution and sati are indigenous problems. I have seen you post articles over the years but I really cannot remember seeing many other posters male or female posting about them. I have posted links to petitions for causes in the Third World only for them to be met with a wall of apathy.

Actually you do have rice paddies in the US but I believe that they are pretty much all mechanised operations. It is grown mostly in Arkansas, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, and California.

Let's discuss this practice that started millenia ago (before Islam, just to get that out of the way). Who invented this? Men. Who perpetuates this practice? Men. Who thinks that women's "rampant sexuality" needs to be controlled by genital mutilation? Men. Who thinks that women who don't have this procedure are unclean? Men.

So why don't you and the other haters go after those responsible for genital mutilation, that would be MEN.

Actually that isn't strictly true as often as not the circumcision is done by women.

Comfort Momoh, a specialist midwife in England, writes that in Ethiopia the Falashas perform it when the child is a few days old, the Amhara on the eighth day of birth, while the Adere and Oromo choose between four years and puberty. I get email daily alerting me to the horrific conditions people live under in some countries. This is just a small sample from today, all of them good causes, all of them asking for donations. How much can one person do? Or even one hundred, or one thousand?

The practice was started by men. And yes, it galls me that some women in those countries actually perform the procedure, or turn a blind eye to it because they've been culturally indoctrinated.
