My immigrant parents, grandparents, aunts, and cousins kept their language, their heritage, their culture, their religion...and proudly so. English always was the second language used at home.

Even in light of this, they took steps to be good citizens and members of the community.

There is no contradiction - none whatsoever - between keeping your language, culture, and heritage, and being a patriotic member of the community.

So what would I say to someone who told my aunt to give up her culture and assimilate?
I would tell them to get fucked.

Nobody is telling anybody to give their culture ffs, yet another that doesn't understand the difference between multi-ethnicity and multi-culturalism. Trying to explain Islamic fundamentalism to dippy hippy Californians is just too difficult.
