Read your history; before the Russians invaded Kabul was a westernized city like Tehran, New Delhi and other third world nations.

From Putin's perspective, there are millions of people in Ukraine and Belarus who moved there from Russia proper during the Soviet era. To a greater or lesser degree these people's first language was always Russian, and they maintained family ties back in Russia. I know Russians who have family in Ukraine and Belarus, and one of my friends was born near Moscow but moved to Crimea in the 1980s.

Ukrainian and Belarusian nationalism was always driven by the people who culturally indentified with those parts of the former Russian empire, had long standing roots there, and spoke Ukrainian or Belarusian, at least at home.


Irrespective of Putin's perspective, there is no legal or moral justification to violate the sovereignty of neighboring countries. Despite what the Kremlin apologists on the board claim.

Russia is an artificial state encompassing indigenous peoples with different languages (There are 35 official languages in different regions of Russia) attempting to impose it's will on other artificial states.

The problem with your arguments is you don't apply them equally to all parties. If we accept your argument, the US or England could declare any region of Russia where people happen to speak English to be an independent state. (It's estimated that 17 million people in Russia speak English.) By that argument most of the world would be part of the US or England since the majority of countries have a population that speaks English.
