True, the money given in God's name was to be used for charity, not to fatten a priest's wallet. But Jesus didn't whip people who did/do (he did deal with a few indirectly).

There's been a one thousand percent increase in the nation's population since 1810 which quite naturally leads to exponentially more litigation and court cases of all types.

And two hundred years ago there were barely any Jews, Muslims, Hindus, or Buddhists in this country, so quite naturally we can expect some pushback against displays of nativity scenes and biblical language in government buildings and publically owned property.
 
There is no real "religious" freedom for Agnostics or Atheists in our country. They must live by the rules set up by the people who blindly guess there is at least one god...and that the god reveals its existence through books. Mind you, the god supposedly created the entire universe...the size of which it is difficult for a human mind to comprehend...yet the best this god could do is through books written by relatively unsophisticated, relatively uneducated, superstitious ancient peoples.

And those of us who do not make this blind guess must still accept, as part of citizenship, that we are "under" this god; that we "trust" this god; and that we have obligations to this god.

My guess is there will be people in the future who wonder why we dared to suppose ourselves to be an intelligent species at this time.
