I know we really don't need another thread about this topic.
But it galls me that so many are ranting as though they are building a mosque with spinnerettes that will cater only to muslims.

"The plan at this stage is for the prayer space to occupy only one floor of a 13-story building. The rest would house a swimming pool, a concert auditorium, a gymnasium, a child-care facility, a library, a culinary school and a restaurant. Scheffe says it will bear a strong resemblance to Manhattan's 92nd Street Y."

"But let's not overreact. Much of what we've heard about the building is not quite true. It's not a mosque: It's a 13-story, YMCA-style community center, with a gym, pool, lecture hall, performing arts venue and library, all of which will be open to the public — and it will have a mosque occupying one floor.
It's not at or next to Ground Zero: It's two blocks away, in an area of tall commercial buildings and at least one gentleman's club. It won't tower over the site where the World Trade Center towers stood: It will be one of the shorter structures around, and it will have only an obstructed view of the 1,776-foot skyscraper going up at the site."

Park51 will grow into a world-class community center, planned to include the following facilities:
•outstanding recreation spaces and fitness facilities (swimming pool, gym, basketball court)
•a 500-seat auditorium
•a restaurant and culinary school
•cultural amenities including exhibitions
•education programs
•a library, reading room and art studios
•childcare services
•a mosque, intended to be run separately from Park51 but open to and accessible to all members, visitors and our New York community
•a September 11th memorial and quiet contemplation space, open to all
This constant arguing that this project runs counter to the needs of the area and that it is some sort of trophy or terrorist training ground completely ignores the reality of what they are trying to build.
If you are going to argue against it, at least know what it is that you are attacking. They are not building a mosque. If thats what they wanted, the existing building would suffice.
