Yes.. the Syrian civil war was strictly the fault of the Assad regime.. and ISIS moved in .....

the question though is did Assad have authority to crack down on the demonstrations, which became quickly political- and not just about food. I say he did.
But the brutality of the response ( unlike Qadafi's non-crackdown on civilian protestors) was all out of proportion to the protests and spawned the FSA

Hayfez was the same.. brutal.. Syria has a long history of military coups and assassinations. Assad promised reforms for 3 years before the schoolboys were arrested and tortured.. His "friends" in Iran and Russia did NOTHING to help.

It's obvious to me that strongmen are required in Libya and Syria, and even in Iraq.
Egypt to a lessor case in that there is a much better pluralistic government-but even Tunisia where the Arab Spring started is a heavy presidential government..

which is why my instincts are to stay out, given the blowback from Libya/Iraq.
Thank goodness for Sisi. he's an authoritarian too,but he was needed to keep the country from becoming
a theocracy under Morsi

They could have counseled Assad.. and provided humanitarian aid.

Idris was very successful in governing Libya and he wasn't a strongman.. Assad was never a strongman..

I don't know much about Idris. Since you lived there, I'll take your word on it. maybe because it was a monarchy?

As much as I loathe Iran's terrorism and regional hegemony, i think it's disengeuous to put any blame on any other government other then assads
