Does misusing the term "racism" make you feel more intelligent?
I remember that shirt/slogan. And you're right - it wouldn't go over the same if a white person wore it, with "white" substituted.
That's because the black experience in America has been a whole different animal. People are still alive who had to drink out of different fountains, and sit in the back of the bus. "Equal opportunity" had no meaning in the black community. And a black guy getting elected President? That would have been laughable just a few decades ago.
That's why I get it when Sam Jackson said he voted for a guy just because he's black, and indicated that all other things are basically equal in the choice because everyone at that level is "just a politician." I can understand why it would be issue #1 for someone just to see that barrier broken.
Is it racism if I thought that all black people voted for Barack because he "looked like them"? Is it racism if I thought that all whites voted for all the previous Presidents because they "looked like them"?
The racism isn't in the vote, it is in the negative stereotype that is associated with others through both ignorance and assumption. There may indeed be some people who voted for McCain "because" he was white, but they are extremely rare and it is certainly not well evidenced by the past Presidencies. Had zillions of whites voted against Obama that otherwise would normally vote Democrat you may have some evidence of this, but the idea that those who would normally vote for a republican due to policy disagreements with Democrats voted for McCain because he "looked like them" is ignorant pap. Trying to support it with such vehemence is oddly intriguing. Why do you want it to be true so much?
Emulating racists that would vote for "the guy that looks like them" is not something of which I would be proud. Assuming that everybody of a certain pigment have in the past is a gross assumption, clearly and flatly shown to be wrong by the fact that nobody crossed party lines to vote against Obama due to the fact that McCain "looked like them"...
My dictionary says, RACISM:

As always, you completely misinterpret what I say, based on your knee-jerk reaction. I'm not trying to claim that tons of people voted against Obama because he's black. My whole argument on this thread is that I understand why guys like Jackson voted FOR Obama because he's black.

So, you're firmly in the Yurt camp, then? You have absolutely NO IDEA why it would be important to someone who is black to see the FIRST BLACK PRESIDENT in their or anyone's lifetime?
Honestly? I find that astounding. It's incomprehensible to me, at all levels, how someone couldn't at least have an inkling of that.

You again didn't read what I wrote. The racism isn't in the vote or in the racial pride that somebody "finally made it"... The racism is in the assumption about those that don't quite "look like him".
And again, do you believe the action should be emulated by every "race"?
I see the vote more like those who were Catholic that voted for Kennedy. A bit of Catholic pride is nothing bad and they were going to vote Democrat anyway, doing it with more excitement because it was the "first" isn't bad. I can more than live with that I can even see it being awesome and cool.
What I disagree with is supporting the additional negative stereotype thrown in that suggests that whites voted for the dude that "looked like them"... It is unsupportable by the evidence at hand and based solely on ignorant assumption.
We all understand it.....its because they are voting by race, for or against.....thus, the term racist.

according to onceler, dung, poet et al....if you vote for a candidate based on their skin color it is not racist. therefore, all their claims of white racism in voting are false, because you can vote for someone just because they are white.

You need to read Jackson's comments again. He is absolutely, 100% talking about barriers.
