Gun violence shouldn't be politicized by either side

I love this post. It really starts to address just how complex this issue is. I'd add that we've evolved to a point where a stable & nurturing family environment is no longer the norm for many. Too many unplanned pregnancies, unwanted children, single-parent homes, et al.

I really don't know what the "fix" is. Your reply was a start, but it probably just scratches the surface.

My heart genuinely hurts when I see each new headline. Far from being "desensitized" to it all because of the frequency, I feel like it gets more painful each time. It probably sounds melodramatic, but I feel like our survival as a species might come down to identifying and providing a remedy for this one issue. I believe so many of our other problems come from whatever this is a symptom of. That was the impetus for this thread - we need to band together on this one, and figure it out.

Thanks.

Typical Right winger - full of certainty about the law; couldn't give you a case if his life depended on it.
is there a reason why YOU don't know the cases? right, your handlers keep you ignorant.

The idea behind protecting militias with a citizen Constitutional right was to defend the national government; the Founders saw a standing army as an inherent danger to the government. Try reading books instead of comic strips and blogs for your history education. You can use Google though to educate yourself on the Second Amendment. “Heller 2008” is enough to get you there.
or you can read the senate committee on the right to bear arms from 1982. Or you can read the numerous state and federal court cases from before Heller.

or you can actually read the founders comments regarding their right to keep and bear arms......

None of the cases in your link established an individual right. Only Heller does. You might have an excuse not having an education in the law but you forfeit if with your adamant ignorance.

The country is too partisan anyway. Why is an issue like this such that as soon as there is a new incident, we hear one side or the other, blaming the other side?

No one is "blaming" the left, your contention that this is a partisan issue is illogical. How can we blame lefties when they hate guns, hate republicans, know nothing ABOUT guns and would never own one. But the second one of these shootings happens, every right-wing gun owner gets it with both barrels (irony intended), and you always throw in the NRA, the KKK and "the nazis" for good measure.

That kind of knee-jerk reaction is really preventing an honest dialogue on this problem. And it's now a huge problem. Things weren't always like this in America. Mass shootings like the ones we see so regularly used to be much more rare.

Preventing an honest dialogue? What's there to talk about anyway? "Ban assault weapons!" right? The simple, brutal truth of it is evil exists on this plain of existence. It doesn't matter if you determine it to be a natural force or of supernatural origin, it's here and we will not legislate it out of existence.

It's a symptom of something much deeper - and more complex than the characterization we see from the typical partisan reactions. We have a sickness as a nation, and we need to figure out what it is.

No, it's really quite simple. When I was born, there were 175 million people in this country, and those people were much more religious than they are today. And before you get all twisted about that, let me explain that the only reason I bring that up is because Christianity isn't just a list of "thou shalt not's" and stuff. If you give it a chance, the bible is a handbook for living in a peaceful society, and this is true for all Abrahamic faiths and others like Buddhism. These are called core or universal values. True Christians lived that life in my day (probably a bit easier without today's technology). Most still do. The truly chronic sickness in this country is a combination of an exploding population exacerbated by open borders. There are over twice as many people now, and logic dictates that the number of criminals and crazies would increase proportionately, and with it the potential for more evil, which you cannot do anything about.

The kids at Sandy Hook were identified by DNA. The weapons we allow people to buy shredded those kids. The news should have shown what the kids were like. Then we would be starting with knowledge. The reality should be shown clearly and then we can discuss why those weapons of war do not belong in citizens' hands.

Gun powder is an explosive- It is dangerous! It's purchase and use must be regulated.

This is common knowledge. Or, At the very least, IT SHOULD BE!

It doesn't matter if the gun powder comes in the form of Dynamite. Bullets, Fireworks. or handmade bombs- All is a danger to society- IF NOT REGULATED.

If you miss this concept- We have deeper problems! Our problem is no longer just the things that make our society unsafe- OUR PROBLEM IS NOW STUPIDITY AND IGNORANCE FOR NOT UNDERSTANDING THIS VERY SIMPLE CONCEPT!!

Stupidity is what now is making us unsafe!

you need to crack some history books about the beliefs and thoughts of the framers. only THEN will you be starting with knowledge. right now, you're just acting on emotion

the problem is that you're not identifying the actual stupidity, which is that of believing that government and regulations make you safer. they do not, or we would be the safest fucking nation on the planet.

We are not the safest nation on the planet for one reason- GUN VIOLENCE IS DESTROYING OUR FREEDOMS HERE- Like attending church, attending school, going out to a night club, attending a concert or movie house, or simply buying groceries or watching a 4th of July parade without the fear of being gunned down by a GUNTARD who got all emotional after watching FOX NEWS!

and over 20,000 gun laws doesn't stop it.............so what extra regulation do you think is going to fix it? here's a clue for your dumb ass.......there isn't one.

If government is the answer, the question was fucking stupid.

If you are going to be anti-establishment- I'd rather not discuss anything with you!

Sorry!

'Antiestablishmentarianism (or anti-establishmentarianism) is a political philosophy that views a nation's or society's power structure as corrupt, repressive, exploitative, or unjust

Then stop politicizing it.
