Gun violence shouldn't be politicized by either side

The country is too partisan anyway. Why is an issue like this such that as soon as there is a new incident, we hear one side or the other, blaming the other side?

That kind of knee-jerk reaction is really preventing an honest dialogue on this problem. And it's now a huge problem. Things weren't always like this in America. Mass shootings like the ones we see so regularly used to be much more rare.

It's a symptom of something much deeper - and more complex than the characterization we see from the typical partisan reactions. We have a sickness as a nation, and we need to figure out what it is.

Disagree, understand the position, but respectfully disagree

Part of the problem has been that guns haven’t been politicalized, too many times “prayers and condolences” is the extent inwhich those that could make a change offer in terms of addressing the problem. Some don’t even recognize there is a problem

When two dozen three and four year old kids get massacred in an elementary school with a semi automatic weapon and nothing changes it shows accepting the norm needs to be challenged politically since that is the only way it can be addressed

Poor anchovies. What do you want to be changed? Thousands of gun laws on the books, prosecutors that plea bargain, Soros appointed attorney generals that do nothing to slow the spread of crime, no bail in many democrat run cities, and those that do impose bail are dealing with funds provided by the likes of Heels Up Harris and Hollywood celebrities, (see Minnesota Freedom Fund) schools that refuse to allow teachers to discipline students, and broken homes without a father figure.

What would I like done, obviously not what is being done now, it doesn’t work, 611 mass shooting of innocent Americans and over 40 school shootings since the beginning of the year proves it doesn’t work

Rest of your post is just a regurgitation of useless talk radio/Fox rhetoric

what do you propose that doesn't infringe on the rights of over 80 MILLION Americans?

We should stop selling weapons of war to civilians. That would be a reasonable start. Of course, background searches before allowing a handgun. Even the NRA was for that. people with anger issues, mental problems, and who have committed violent acts should be banned from guns forever. A restraint order...no gun.

So basically everyone that votes left. I agree.

Look for the common denominator.

There are laws on the books for a long time requiring mental health professionals to report patients who are a danger to themselves or others which puts them on the background check database and prevents buying guns. Try and find one of these mass killers that did not have interactions with mental health professionals.

Prosecute a few for failing to do their job and see how quickly those lists swell and loonies are forced to the black market.

I'm reasonalby sure we can agree that these shooters are loonies.

Start by infringing on the rights of 80 MILLION Americans.

The Second Amendment doesn't have to be interpreted as conferring an individual right to bear arms. That "discovery" wasn't made until 2008 when the Supreme Court for the first time found that it does confer that right. The SC can discover its error and correct the law. All firearms except those suitable for in the home defense and hunting should be banned and licenses required, limited to persons over the age of 21, for all firearms without exception.

How fucking stupid are you?

Some ideas about the cause:

1. We love war and violence. It's in much of our entertainment. (But then other countries, like Japan, have even more violent movies/TV.)

2. We let our kids play violent video games. (But then kids around the world play them.)

3. We have untreated mental illness cases by the boatload. (But so do other nations; mental illness is not just here.)

4. We have too much bullying. (Again, part of the human condition and worldwide).

5. We have too many guns and too lax laws. (hmmm -- very different from most of the rest of the world)

we are disinclined to acquiesce to your request. your move.

everything you just said is wrong and lies. there are nearly a dozen federal and state court cases that make it clear that the 2nd Amendment is an INDIVIDUAL right, all from before the 2008 case. there is no error, except for your desire to infringe on the rights of 80 million Americans.

you should also crack a history book and all the founder era commentaries to see for yourself that the framers WANTED the populace to outgun the government.

the bolded is the only wrong part of your statement.

Tell Nomad that.

I love this post. It really starts to address just how complex this issue is. I'd add that we've evolved to a point where a stable & nurturing family environment is no longer the norm for many. Too many unplanned pregnancies, unwanted children, single-parent homes, et al.

I really don't know what the "fix" is. Your reply was a start, but it probably just scratches the surface.

My heart genuinely hurts when I see each new headline. Far from being "desensitized" to it all because of the frequency, I feel like it gets more painful each time. It probably sounds melodramatic, but I feel like our survival as a species might come down to identifying and providing a remedy for this one issue. I believe so many of our other problems come from whatever this is a symptom of. That was the impetus for this thread - we need to band together on this one, and figure it out.

First the left blames the right for everything. Next things are like this because of Obama bin laden who wanted to " fundamentally" change America. Seems like he did just that.

Typical Right winger - full of certainty about the law; couldn't give you a case if his life depended on it.

The idea behind protecting militias with a citizen Constitutional right was to defend the national government; the Founders saw a standing army as an inherent danger to the government. Try reading books instead of comic strips and blogs for your history education. You can use Google though to educate yourself on the Second Amendment. “Heller 2008” is enough to get you there.
