Govt about to mandate SPEED LIMITERS on commercial vehicles over 26,000 pounds

Now driving 55 in the passing lane is a real issue. But driving 55 in the far right lane is perfectly legal on highways. If you cannot drive around a truck in the far right lane going 55 safely, you are going too fast.

55mph on an 80mph road is NOT SAFE.

Since self-driving trucks (and cars) are likely to be mandated by law soon, it's not as though we'll have a choice.

U.S. eliminates human controls requirement for fully automated vehicles

U.S. regulators on Thursday issued final rules eliminating the need for automated vehicle manufacturers to equip fully autonomous vehicles with manual driving controls to meet crash standards.

Federal Agency Legalizes Self-Driving Cars Without Steering Wheels, Pedals

NHTSA is helping pave the way for Level 5 autonomous cars and trucks.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced a groundbreaking rule change that updates Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. The regulatory change clears the way for driverless cars that don't have traditional controls like a steering wheel or pedals.

FMVSS requirements inform virtually every aspect of production cars, setting out exacting rules that every automaker must follow, right down to mandating things like windshield wiper placement and even motor speeds. Up until now, federal law has required a dedicated driver's seat, steering wheel, steering column and pedals in vehicles, crimping auto and tech company ambitions for testing prototype vehicles.

There are no fully autonomous vehicles on sale to consumers today, but they're something manufacturers and supplier companies are hard at work developing.

These are not mandates to buy self driving cars. They are laws to ALLOW self driving cars.

This industry will fail. Who is responsible for the wreck caused by a self driving car? The manufacturer, of course. There is no driver to sue. I wouldn't touch that industry with a 100 ft pole.

Can't happen? It already DID! A self driving car ran over an autonomous robot during CES one year. A Tesla recently smashed into a Citation jet when it tried to drive to it's owner by itself.

Automated trucking, a technical milestone that could disrupt hundreds of thousands of jobs, hits the road

I wouldn't give any credence to CBS news. They are well known for making shit up.

Yes - it's being tried but it's not gonna catch on in a big way. Self driving vehicles will never be more than a niche.

It is not being tried. There are NO self driving vehicles on the road other than carefully conducted experiments. NONE of them are for sale.
It may not even be a niche for long (once it happens). Lawsuits will kill the manufactures by a thousand cuts. There is no one but the manufacturer to sue in the event of an accident.

when Canadian truckers slowed down and drove bumper to bumper at 55 mph, lib'ruls complained they were blocking traffic with meaningless protests........

I remember how long that convoy became. One end was entering Ontario while the other end was still entering Manitoba.

An in every town, Canadians cheering them on.

You're a failed wannabe cop using a 3,000 lb. weapon because you enjoy forcing others to obey You, not the law. It makes you feel more manly. Pathetic. :palm: It is you that causes accidents and traffic jams. You aren't keeping anyone safe. You are the danger.

"People have different interpretations of how to drive in the left lane, but staying there when you’re not passing isn’t allowed in most states, despite what some drivers might think. Blame the confusion on the lack of a nationwide law. In 29 states, there are laws that any car moving slower than the surrounding traffic should be in the right lane, while other states are stricter and designate the left lane only for turning or passing. In Georgia, it’s actually a misdemeanor to move slower in the left lane than surrounding traffic. This year, Tennessee cracked down and now has established a $50 fine for slow left-lane drivers."

In many States, being in the left lane unless you are passing is itself a misdemeanor. Just driving along at the same speed as the right lane is enough to get a ticket.

HAHAHA. Hey moron. How are you going to enforce a law like that? How are you going to establish in a court of law what the surrounding traffic was doing at that particular monent? THINK, you stupid moron tranny.

Easy. The cop that pulled you over is a witness. They probably have a video record of it too, since dash cams are now pretty much standard equipment on cop cars.

Give the government time.

Going 68 on an 80mph road is DANGEROUS.

Highways almost always have a lower speed limit of 45 or 50 mph. There are many vehicles who cannot go above 68, and many drivers who do not feel comfortable going above 68. If, as you claim, cars can not safely drive on those roads at 80mph, we need to lower the upper speed limit. The only reason the upper speed limit would be that high is someone claimed it would be safe for it to be 80 driving with 50 mph.
