Now driving 55 in the passing lane is a real issue. But driving 55 in the far right lane is perfectly legal on highways. If you cannot drive around a truck in the far right lane going 55 safely, you are going too fast.

55mph on an 80mph road is NOT SAFE.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced a groundbreaking rule change that updates Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. The regulatory change clears the way for driverless cars that don't have traditional controls like a steering wheel or pedals.

FMVSS requirements inform virtually every aspect of production cars, setting out exacting rules that every automaker must follow, right down to mandating things like windshield wiper placement and even motor speeds. Up until now, federal law has required a dedicated driver's seat, steering wheel, steering column and pedals in vehicles, crimping auto and tech company ambitions for testing prototype vehicles.

There are no fully autonomous vehicles on sale to consumers today, but they're something manufacturers and supplier companies are hard at work developing.

These are not mandates to buy self driving cars. They are laws to ALLOW self driving cars.

This industry will fail. Who is responsible for the wreck caused by a self driving car? The manufacturer, of course. There is no driver to sue. I wouldn't touch that industry with a 100 ft pole.

Can't happen? It already DID! A self driving car ran over an autonomous robot during CES one year. A Tesla recently smashed into a Citation jet when it tried to drive to it's owner by itself.

It is not being tried. There are NO self driving vehicles on the road other than carefully conducted experiments. NONE of them are for sale.
It may not even be a niche for long (once it happens). Lawsuits will kill the manufactures by a thousand cuts. There is no one but the manufacturer to sue in the event of an accident.

In many States, being in the left lane unless you are passing is itself a misdemeanor. Just driving along at the same speed as the right lane is enough to get a ticket.

Going 68 on an 80mph road is DANGEROUS.

Highways almost always have a lower speed limit of 45 or 50 mph. There are many vehicles who cannot go above 68, and many drivers who do not feel comfortable going above 68. If, as you claim, cars can not safely drive on those roads at 80mph, we need to lower the upper speed limit. The only reason the upper speed limit would be that high is someone claimed it would be safe for it to be 80 driving with 50 mph.
