Well there are a lot of Neo-Confederate revisionist who had those opinions. When the facts are examined in the open light those Lost Cause mythologies don’t hold up to the facts.
The Lost Cause Doctrine in Relation To Cognitive Dissonance
The lost cause doctrine is a controversial belief that arose in the aftermath of the American Civil War and asserts that the Confederacy's cause was just and that the South was not responsible for the war.
Cognitive dissonance is the psychological phenomenon in which individuals hold two or more conflicting beliefs or values and experience discomfort as a result. In order to reduce this discomfort, individuals may engage in various psychological defense mechanisms, such as rationalization and denial, in order to maintain their belief system.
The lost cause doctrine provides a convenient and attractive justification for those who wish to defend the Confederacy and reframes the Civil War as a just and honorable war. However, the reality is that the Confederacy fought a war to preserve slavery, a deeply unethical and inhumane institution.
Refusing to accept that fighting to protect slavery necessitates a significant amount of mental gymnastics, as it requires individuals to reconcile their belief in the Confederacy's cause with the knowledge that slavery was a central issue in the Civil War.
Even in the Confederate States of America’s own constitution, slavery was established as an undeniable right. Article I, Section 9, stated that “no law denying or impairing the right of property in negro slaves shall be passed.”
