An FBI agent involved in the investigation into the fatal shooting of Renee Good has resigned, raising concerns that the inquiry may have been halted for political reasons, according to Mary Moriarty, Hennepin County’s attorney.
Moriarty said the agent’s resignation suggests she believed a full civil rights investigation was warranted. “It tells me that a professional investigator, an FBI agent who was a career agent as opposed to a political appointee, thought that it was appropriate to do a complete investigation and send it to the Department of Justice,” Moriarty said.
The agent had initially begun working with Minnesota investigators on a civil rights probe into the fatal ICE shooting. Soon after, she was directed to reclassify the case as an investigation into an alleged assault on the officer involved. Federal authorities also blocked the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension from continuing to participate.
Two sources familiar with the matter said that the agent resigned following those decisions, which shifted the scope of the investigation away from potential civil rights violations.

Toll records are a form of telephonic metadata held by phone carriers. Smith also sought judicial non-disclosure orders (NDOs) on the subpoenas to prevent providers from telling either the members or congressional administration that the toll records had been sought and provided. A federal statute, 2 U.S.C. § 6628, prohibits the use of NDOs on subpoenas involving Senate devices. }
