Federal Workers Filing For Government Unemployment Compensation Benefits.

Hello Damocles,

This is inane. Imagine those people who used to be paid by city governments to scoop up horse poo in the streets... still out there, walking around with shovels... because clearly they are doing it right, there's no horse poo!

OK, I'll grant you that one. Some jobs are phased out due to technology changes. I don't believe government should be required to find jobs for technology-displaced workers, but I do believe government should try everything possible to utilize dedicated workers whose function is no longer needed. Either retrain them or pay them a pension reflective of their years of service.

Hello Evmetro,

Here's what I get. Tell me if I'm wrong: You just want to destroy any part of government you can, any way possible, because you hate all government, only begrudgingly acknowledge that we actually need one, wish it to be as small as possible. What I don't get is why you hate government. Our Constitution says we are supposed to have one.

We make our own government in the USA. Instead of detesting government and trying to keep it as small as possible, we should create a government we can be happy with, one we can be proud of, one that works for us, one that helps us have better lives. We pool our resources in this way. Instead of being 300 million + individuals fending for ourselves, we are united by our government and we all benefit from the combined strength of it. The more powerful our government is, the more powerful our nation is. We can use that power for good, you know.

Political laws of physics

A starving government = strong people. Starving people = strong government.

I do not believe that the government has the ability or any reason to guarantee the continuation of your job solely because you landed a government job. Let's say we have cars that drive for us in the future, licenses are no longer necessary, those guys who take people out to see if you qualify for a driver's license no longer are necessary, we do not have an obligation to magic up a job to replace it, or make up some unnecessary make work, nor should we.

Agreed. I am not for paying people to do something which is not a justified useful benefit to the USA. But I also believe it is appropriate to at least try to reposition workers who have dedicated their working years to something. Society works better if we look out for one another.

I disagree. We should strive to have a great government which promotes the general welfare.

A country can't be great unless it has a great government.
