Thats because Christian doctrine was written in Latin, read only by the clergy. Christianity was whatever the Catholic Church said was christian doctrine. The printing press, the spread of literacy and the translation and publication of bibles, and you get the protestant reformation. Government of by and for the people.

And the Islamic Caliphate spanned from 632 to 1924. Did Christianity have anything that long?

They are religious extremists period. Islam is a religion of peace as is Chrisitanity. Extremists from both have been murdering for eons.
