The only way to get what you want is to influence one of the only two parties that have any chance in hell of accomplishing anything.
That, in turn, can only be done from within the party.

It's absolutely impossible for me to have a Republican close friend or to not completely and permanently disown a Republican family member.
I think that your reluctance to commit to a party is the residual effect of a mid-western "rugged independent" upbringing that I'm probably not quite able to understand.
As a union person and a Sicilian, taking sides and offering/demanding loyalty is in my DNA.
