Defund public libraries

Ohhhhh no, they read books and use the internet, how scary. I guess it scares Trumpublicans to have educated immigrants.

They seem perturbed at education, period. Missouri has a $6 billion budget surplus. This move to defund public libraries is nothing more than the Reichwingers' petty grievance politics. They passed a bill recently that removed hundreds of books from school libraries that had LGBTQ characters or that dealt with the topic. They can't legally remove them from public libraries, so instead they're removing funding which effectively bans *all* books.

It's only a matter of time before the bonfires start.

you are such a fucking moron.

how do I worship the corrupt orange man?

derp derp bigot. derp derp

Western civilization decided almost 200 years ago that all citizens, regardless of economic or social status, should have free and easy access to literature, books, periodicals, newspapers.

I have never heard of this public service even being open for debate until 21st century American conservatives started hollering about defunding public libraries.

Missouri is one confusing state. Marijuana dispensaries were everywhere, but such backwards politics.

In this country, there has always been a contingent that opposed it. But my point is technology is making it less important - hence my blockbuster video store analogy

Cheap and easy access to the internet would be my focus - not brick and mortar solutions

21st century libraries are not the equivalent of Blockbuster video stores. Well funded libraries have gone digital, and I can watch streaming content, or download e-books, audio, and digital content from the comfort of my house.

And I can do it for free, which can't be said of commercial streaming and digital services.,

Not every place has that.

yet me still pay for and maintain giant store fronts - heating and cooling them.

Yes, dumbass, it's called being a part of society. If you ever need the services of the library (whenever you learn to read properly) they'll be there for you.

Meanwhile Lockheed Martin is 1.6 TRILLION deep into the F-35 and still haven't delivered a plane with everything they promised AFAIK. They want MORE money. But you're mad about the place with all the books.

The dispensaries weren't as numerous at this time last year; voters in Nov. 2022 approved rec MJ. Medicinal MJ had been around for just a few years before that. It's the (R) legislators who are fucking up everything. The ppl themselves tend to be more live-and-let-live and less in-your-face extremists.

Libraries face tough choices when homeless patrons set up permanent residence

Could a San Francisco experiment be an answer to L.A.’s sprawling street encampments? (answer is NO)

BTW, this is a major reason Whole Foods pulled out of San Fran. That campsite is about 2 short blocks from their store.

Upping security and arresting those that camp comes in for criticism...

None of those are reasons to defund libraries

I can respect that.

But why does the Federal Government need involved in any way?

It doesn't "need" to be, but federal funds gives incentive to local districts to spend on things it does not prioritize or have the funds to do well; for example, special education.

Like many federal programs, there is a lot of unnecessary expense and hiring additional staff to meet regulations accompanying the funds.

But, districts do not have to take those funds. It spends lots of time looking through catalogs to learn which grants they might qualify for. If it doesn't qualify, they have a department of "planned deviations" to qualify.
